The intercom rang in my ears in an almost deafening way. I awoke, my head pounding and my ears ringing. Sunlight also hurt my eyes, as it streamed through the window. I struggled to get out of bed. I did manage to get up and get ready for the day. Was I having a headache or a migraine? I checked my temperature, I seemed normal. I didn't have a runny nose and I could still smell and taste.
I decided to skip breakfast today and laid down for a bit. I lay there for a while and few hours even passed, but I couldn't go to sleep. I decided to go to the nurses office. The lady at the desk had me sit down in the waiting room. I sat there for a few minutes and heard my name being called.
The nurse had me sit down on this bed looking thing and started asking me some questions.
Rebecca: Hello, I'm nurse Shultz; but you can call me Rebecca okay. I'm going to take your temperature and test your blood pressure. Do you have a runny nose? Or a sore throat?
Terrance: No
Rebecca: Are you experiencing any flu like symptoms, like fever, chills?
Terrance: No
Rebecca: Okay, so your blood pressure is good; and it looks like you don't have a fever either. What brings you here?
Terrance: Uh... Well, my head hurts and I think I have a headache
Rebecca: When did your headache first start?
Terrance: Uh... Today, this morning I think
Rebecca: Okay so, you woke up with a headache this morning?
Terrance: Yea...
Rebecca: Do you have a history of getting headaches?
Terrance: Uh... No, I don't think so; at least not like these
Rebecca: Are you sensitive to light?
Terrance: Um... I don't know, I mean the sun did bother me a bit
Rebecca: Does it feel like a throbbing pain, or a shooting pain?
Terrance: Uh... it feels like my heart is beating in my head
Rebecca: But you're saying you're having a throbbing pain right?
Terrance: Y.. yeah" Ouch"
Rebecca: Oh... okay, well I'm going to see if I can get the doctor to write you a prescription for Excedrin okay
Terrance: Uh... okay thanks
I left the nurses office with my medication and took it right away. I felt an almost immediate relief as my headache slowly subsided. I looked at the clock, it read just five after twelve PM. So, I made my way to the support group meeting.
I entered the room, the meeting was already starting; so I went to find a seat while people were talking. Dave glanced at me for a second and had this slightly worried and confused look before focusing on others. The support group meeting soon ended and Dave quickly made his way over to me before I started to leave.
Dave: Hey... hey Terrance, hey buddy what's up? Why haven't you been going to your sessions?
Terrance: Oh... Sorry Dave, I've just been going through a lot lately
Dave: I can see that, you don't seem to be doing well; what's wrong?
Terrance: Uh... I don't know, I woke up with a headache this morning
Dave: Meet me in my room alright
We got to Dave's room and he had me set down on a chair.
Dave: Okay so, you woke up with a headache; are you still feeling like your head hurts?
