Pretending everything is fine
pretending you don't see the world
through dark sunglasses
only in shades of gray and black

The loss of one
reminding you that all is fleeting
everything transient
nothing permanent

And you hold close to the rest
pulling them tighter to your heart
suffocating them with words
and possessiveness

Every moment suddenly precious
every glance
every touch
as you sense the world's mortality.
