"So...." I started awkwardly. You can probably tell by now that I'm an awkward person. "You're my father, huh?
"Yes, yes he is sweetie." My mom answered for him.
"So mom, you never really told me why you left that day..." I trailed off.
I got lost in my own trail of thought but when I snapped back to reality, the door closed quietly. I scanned the room and noticed that neither my dad or Dylan were there. It was only me and my mom.
"Look sweetie, I know I didn't have time to explain back then, but I think it's time for you to know now." She sat down next to me on the bed, fumbling with her fingers.
"And why haven't you come back after- I don't know- 5 years? And I thought my father was dead...?"
"You see, that's the thing, I didn't know either. That day I left was when people told me he was alive. And so I had to look for him. I kne-""But why didn't you take me with you?" I noticed I had just interrupted her. "Sorry, please continue."
"It's okay. Well anyway, I knew it would take quite a while to find him- I mean the world is huge, filled with unexpected things. So I asked Nicole, which you now know very well, to take care of you instead. And the reason I didn't come back? That I don't even know. I guess I was so caught up with trying to find your father that once I found him, I kind of forgot?" She said it as more of a question.
"How do you know Dylan?"
"We were friends with his parents."
"Past tense."
"What?"
"You said were friends with his parents." I said, emphasizing were.
"Yes. Because we were friends with his parents before they passed away... So we took in Dylan to take care of him. They were good people. And we couldn't just leave Dylan by himself. He was too young to live off by himself."
"Oh. Well that explains a lot."
"Yep." She replied before getting up from the bed. "Now, why don't you and Dylan go out and he'll show you around here."
"Uhh... Okay...?" I went through the door and there he was on his phone again. This time I think texting someone.
My mom said something to him and he replied with, "Yeah, okay sure. Cmon Alex, let's go." Still not looking up from his phone.
I was just walking in front of him when I heard someone yelling. "Ow!!" Oh, Dylan... This is why you don't use your phone while walking.
I turned around to see him getting up on the floor and his phone near him. I burst out laughing and he just glared at me, rubbing his head to get rid of the pain from running into the wall.
"This is why you need to pay attention, Dylan." I said, still laughing.
"Shut up. Let's just go." He pulled me outside the building and showed me around.
The first thing I noticed was a hut selling shaved ice. Of course, we got some and then she showed me everywhere else.
After a while we were just about to go swimming in the ocean when he got a call. Oddly, I got a call as well.
