Isla had always known that the world was ending and that humanity was going to be the cause. Passing no regard as to how many posters she put up in the halls of her high school, kids would always laugh at her and take the posters down. Little did they know that not listening to her would be the cause of their downfall. The signals were clear, it started slowly, marked by an increase in tornadoes and earthquakes. They worsened gradually with numerous cases of wildfires and tsunamis. To blend in, she stopped caring, quit the environmental club and ceased warning people of the global crisis, she even got herself a boyfriend Ezra Rivers, the captain of the swim team. Ezra knew of the consequences of their actions, he knew that mankind could salvage the Earth if only they worked together. But he slowly gave up; Isla was the only other human who seemed aware of the effects of humanity's actions. She would inform people and hang posters; however, one day even her actions came to an end.

The day they got together could have marked a new start for the world, but to blend in, they remained ignorant. Isla felt peaceful, a sentiment that she hadn't felt for a long time. She felt joy, and overall, she was happy, but she knew it wasn't going to last. Months passed, and the world began to self-destruct, attempting to revert to the joyous planet it once was before being destroyed by ongoing wars and pollution. Isla and Ezra ran to find shelter in the one place they knew would stay the same—the place they got together, Mount Denali. After reaching the top, they sat and watched the destruction unfold below. Isla thought about her favorite quote: 'If you don't speak up, then things will never change,' and the chaos they could've prevented if they had followed its wise I words.

In the end, our story didn't start at chapter one but by the time we realized that it was already too late Maybe it could've been different. We could've been different, we knew everything and yet we couldn't do anything. It was all set in stone and yet we still danced with innocence, oblivious to all the pages that were burning around us. We were lost in our fairytale when it was always meant to end in flames and tragedy. We didn't see the start but we lived to see the end as everything turned into ashes and none of us remained. Standing on top of the mountain, watching the sunset as Mother Earth reclaimed the land that was once hers, I came to a realization. He was the sun, radiating warm rays of light, and I was Icarus with wings of hope , and no other beings could ever make a perfect pair. If only I knew that hope was like a candle of wax because the brighter the flame that it cradles the faster it melts into cold pools of darkness.
