Dinner Time: Jess

I sighed as I walked down the stairs. I didn't feel like doing anything, but I was starving, and the smell from the kitchen was heavenly. So I forced my body down the stairs and into the dining room. Two plates of grilled cheese and tomato soup sat on the table. Chelsea was talking on the phone with someone. A man. He was asking her if she wanted to go to Cheesecake Factory. 

She hung up the call and the moment she saw me sitting at the table, she looked like she had been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. She gulped and sat down. "So, who was that on the phone?" I asked as I picked up the grilled cheese, dipped it in the soup, and took a bite. She started to say something, but I didn't hear her. I stared at the grilled cheese as I chewed the bite. It tasted just like Mom's.

Crisp around the edges, but softer towards the middle, the cheese melted in your mouth. It was cheesy, the tomato soup had her signature add-in of cilantro, and all the flavors came together making a perfect harmony. I felt my eyes start to water. "Are you okay Jess?" Chelsea asked me worriedly. 

"Oh I'm fine," I said. "It just.... tastes like how mom made it." Chelsea gave me a sad smile. 

"I thought you would like it. I followed your mom's recipe. She gave me a copy a while back so I thought I would make it for you. Is it okay? Is it too burnt? I cooked it a little too long I think." Chelsea blurted out. I smiled as much as I could while being sad. 

"It's delicious," I whispered. Chelsea nodded and we finished our meal in silence.
