Chapter Four
I wake up the next morning to the rising and falling of Connor's chest. I take a moment to appreciate him sound asleep. He looks so peaceful when he is sleeping and I can't help but stare at this beautiful stranger. His smell intoxicates me as I take a deep breath. He begins to stir and he opens his beautiful eyes and smiles at me.
"Hey beautiful, how did you sleep?" His tone was deep and dark, making a good feeling pool in the bottom of my stomach.
"I slept better knowing I was in the arms of the authority, literally." He chuckles at my comment.
"I really do apologize for everything that happened, I know yesterday must have been rough on you. Are you okay? You know, emotionally, mentally, and physically?" He wears a concerned face well, along with any other face because he is just a site for sore eyes.
"Physically I am okay, mentally and emotionally however is a different story. That whole message kind of freaked me out and I found out a few things about my moms past that I had no idea about. I would stay I am hanging on to my sanity by a single thread and the thread can break at any moment." I realize how insane I must sound to him as the words spill out of my mouth, but that's how I feel. My mother has lied to me; I could have died last night because I was careless and only worried about what was happening in front of me not around me.
"Well, if there is anything, anything at all I can do for you just let me know. We are trying our best to find out who this person was who broke into your house last night. However, the person must be a genius, we found no trace of footprints, DNA, nothing. This person is good at covering up their tracks. I'm terrified to leave you here unprotected knowing that it could happen again." Connor looks to me with worry in his eyes.
Good at covering their tracks? That sounds familiar, almost too familiar. Just then, it hit me. David Black is a man who is skilled in all practices of hiding. What if he was the one who broke in last night? But if it was him, what reason would he have. I may be shaken up by all this but I need to keep digging, I will take this to the grave if I have to, I will and cannot give up.
"Is there anyway someone could you know, stay here or something. I am not comfortable being here knowing that there is someone out there who for some reason wants to kill or talk to me."
Connor runs his fingers through my hair as he thinks.
"Well, it would take some arranging and an agreement on you and your mothers part but maybe I could stay here with you until things cleared up. I'm sure the department would be okay with and your mother sure could use the reassurance that her daughter is safe."
Connor staying in my house, everyday, every night, this is definitely something I want and not just because he happens to be a police officer.
"I would have to talk to my mom, but you are right. I think she would sleep better at night knowing there was someone in the house to protect us at all times. Speaking of my mother, did she come home last night?"
"Yeah, she made sure you were okay and everything and then said something about a business trip to Seattle, she wanted me to tell you that she loves you and she will call you later."
That was odd, my mother leaving me right after the house was broken into? Maybe she thought if she left me here she could finally get rid of me. After all, according to her, I am the spawn of Satan, right?
"Maybe I should try to call her now, this is all extremely strange. I'll be right back." I left Connor to sit alone on the plush couch and walked into the kitchen to pickup the landline. Before I could reach the phone, I saw remnants of the words 'I'll be back for you' still in red on the counter. I grabbed the phone and darted back to the living where I left Connor sitting alone.
"Why is that still written on the counter?" I ask Connor and he looks up from his phone screen.
"Oh yeah sorry about that, the guys tried to scrub it off as best as they could but it just wouldn't budge, don't worry, I'll try to get rid of it once and for all today." He gave me a reassuring look.
"Okay." I gave him a faint smile and focused on the task I had. I dialed my mother's number into the phone and hit send. I waited for minutes and minutes and my mom finally picked up.
"Mom, where the hell are you?" I ask, trying to mask the anger in my voice.
"Sophia, I'm sorry about last night. I was going to stay but I got called away for business, it was really important. Don't worry though, I made sure you were taken care of before I left."
"Whatever Mom, goodbye." Just like that I hung up on my own mother. That was the first time I had done that in my life; it felt invigorating and exciting. She can't take a break from her work for one second to worry about her child's well being? What kind of mother is she?
"I didn't ask her if you could stay and frankly I really don't give a shit. I am adult and she obviously doesn't even care about me so enjoy your stay at hotel de Sophia." I chuckle and throw my arms up to make this place to seem grander than it is.
"Oh, trust me, I will." I smile as Connor lets the words slip from his lips. He winks at me and I walk over to him and cuddle up in his lap. We may have not known each other for long but I feel a sense of comfort when I am around him, and right now that's what I need in my life.
