Chapter Sixteen
Sophia
I see a figure emerge from the darkness and I am immediately become on edge. You can never trust anyone who approaches a girl in the middle of the night. I have no idea who this mysterious figure is and my first instinct is to run.
"It's okay." The dark figure comes into view. The streetlight shines on him revealing a man, probably mid fifties. The figure is tall and slender. I look up at his face and see he has not shaven in weeks, leaving a hideous five o'clock shadow. This man is absolutely terrifying to even look at.
"Who the hell are you?" I question trying not to come on too strong.
"You look just like your mother." The mysterious man says and he examines my body, taking it in inch by inch. I writhe under his gaze and immediately feel uncomfortable like a fish near a shark, knowing he is going to be his next victim.
"How do you know my mother?" This is all becoming extremely terrifying and my stomach keeps flipping turning into a million knots that will not untangle.
"We have a lot of history." The figure smirks revealing repulsive, yellow teeth.
"Can you just leave me alone?" My tone becoming more abrasive, it's one of the many defensive mechanisms I possess.
"Why would you want me to do that?" Confusion creeps into the stranger's voice.
"I have no idea who you are, why else?" I am becoming more and more harsh but what else is there to do? No stranger go walk up to a girl in the middle of night and pretend he knows a thing or two about her.
"You really don't know who I am?" The man wears a look of insult. I have insulted him?
"No clue so if you don't mind, I'd like to get back to my sulking." I move my hands suggesting him to move along.
"Sophia, it's me, Dad." I don't even think twice, I run as fast as I can from the maniac. I look to my left and see there is a thickly wooded area; this will help to conceal me. As I dash off towards the tree line, I can't help but realize how insanely stupid I was. What teenage girl sits at an abandoned gas station near a phone booth, underneath a street light? That is like a scene out of a horror movie, I was asking for something terrifying to happen.
I try to remain calm and focus on the direction of Connors house. If I concentrate hard enough, I can find it. I replay the roads through my mind, every street I turned on, and every direction I went. I have a great sense of direction but running away from your serial killer father can sure alter your thinking.
I finally, by some miracle, find Connors street. I have finally reached the home stretch and I run like my life depends on it. I run up the stairs to Connors intimate house and bang on the door, my hands starting to hurt from the pain. I don't care though; I need to get inside. Connor swings open the door and I run inside, slamming it behind me. I turn to lock every lock and I ram a chair under the handle.
My lungs are filled with a burning sensation that feels as if I've just stepped into an open flame. The fire burns my lungs and moves up my body, invading the back of my throat. The burning sears and it feels like the pain will burn a hole in my throat, making me look crazier than I feel: if that's even possible.
