"I forgive you," David stated, looking at Claire with a mix of relief and happiness. Claire looked up to see David with the same smile as before, but his eyes showed happiness this time. Happiness from his best friend being there for him, not because she was crying. No, David was not that kind of person. He was happy that after so, so, so long, his best friend whom he had loved dearly had forgiven him. "Really!? You forgive me?" Claire asked, surprised and relieved at the same time. "I mean, yeah, sure, you did something horrible because of that secret, but the way I treated you, or, as a matter of fact, the way I didn't treat you at all, doesn't change the fact that you had said that would lead up to this. I'm sorry for that..." Claire said that with so much remorse in her voice that you could think she was depressed.
Then a silence filled the air, but not the awkward kind. No, this was a way more comfortable silence. But it was broken so suddenly... by a big amount of laughter. As Claire looked up, she could see David laughing his ass off. "Ann, as much as I love and care about you, you still are the same annoying ass little girl who I missed and loved so much," David said after his laughter had died down.
"W-what do you mean?" Claire asked, very confused. "I mean, I already forgave you, but I'm still waiting for something. Did you already forget why it got so quiet and sad all of a sudden?" David asked with a half smile. "Oh," is all Claire said as she remembered what started all these 'I'm sorrys'.
'"So... You're still mad about that, aren't you?"' David's voice echoed in Claire's head.
"I forgive you," she finally said.
The next thing Claire knew, she had been tackled by David in a bear hug. After managing to get David off her, Claire decided to ask David, "Hey, D? I know you haven't had the best life, so... I was wondering if you would want to get ice cream, or maybe some pizza?" As Claire finished this sentence, David's eyes quite literally sparkled at the thought of eating actual food in such a long time. "REALLY!?!? CAN WE!? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?" David asked, looking like a child who had just been told he could go to Disneyland. "Haha, yes, we can. Let's go," Claire replied with a chuckle, happy to see David's excitement. They both got up and started walking towards the ice cream parlor nearby.
As they walked, Claire couldn't help but feel grateful for having David as her best friend. They had been through a lot in their friendship, but at that moment, all she felt was pure happiness. When they had gotten to the parlor, she had gotten David a 3-layer ice cream cone that had Neapolitan, lemon, and cotton candy. "So? What do you think? Is it good?" Claire asked, already knowing what David's reaction would be. "UH DUH!" Both Claire and David said in unison. "Ann... I hate you so much," David said with a deadpan look on his face. "I know you love me," Claire said while laughing. And they both laughed, enjoying the moment and each other's company. They talked about everything and anything, catching up on each other's lives and reminiscing about old times.
As they finished their ice cream and walked back to David's alleyway, Claire got an idea. "Hey D? H-how about you... stay over at my place?" Claire asked. "Wait. Really?" David asked as he turned his head to look at his best friend. "I mean is it okay with you?" David asked as he tried to make sure Claire would be okay with it. Claire nodded, smiling at David. "Of course, it's okay with me. I'm happy to have you stay over," she said, her voice filled with warmth. David smiled back, feeling grateful for Claire's understanding and kindness. As they walked towards Claire's house, David couldn't help but feel like everything was going to be okay. With Claire by his side, he knew he could face anything.
When they had finally reached Claire's house David looked up in awe. "Ann... I thought you would buy an expensive house... but you bought your old house instead?" David asked as he slowly looked the house up and down and continued licking his ice cream. "Well, when I saw it on sale I immediately decided to buy it. and can you blame me? Also, I have some people you might want to meet." She said as she walked up the steps and opened the door and two unimaginably fast blurs zoomed through the door and tackled David to the ground. "Hey, WHAT THE HELL???" David asked barely able to understand what was happening as he felt someone suddenly sit on his chest.
