SURPRISE BITCHESSSSSSS yup i'm posting another chapter instead of rehearsing my lines and doing homework!!!!!! the title is from the song Dorthea by Taylor Swift. TW: f slur
The sun was just beginning to set and Travis made his way to the front porch of the cabin. He sat on the wooden stairs of the porch and looked at the pink sky. He couldn't get his mind off of what happened that morning. He couldn't shake the feeling of guilt either. Maybe the kids were right and he was just a faggot. The cabin door opened and he expected to see Sal coming to check on him, but it wasn't Sal. It was the last person he would expect to see. It was Monica.
"Hey Travis." she said quietly. What was she doing? He had stopped talking to her years ago, why was she talking to him? "Hey Monica" he replied. His voice lacked any emotion. She sat down on the stairs next to him. "I yelled at Harlo after you left. Ash had to pull me back to our table." She laughed. Travis just looked down. "How do you deal with it? I mean you always had yourself figured out, why can't I have that?" he asked. Monica tilted her head and looked at the sky. "I mean I just wasn't taught that it was bad. Knowing your father he probably made you think it was, didn't he" Travis nodded and hugged his knees.
"I'm sorry I stopped talking to you." He said in a quiet voice. "It wasn't your fault." she assured him. There was silence for a moment and then Monica spoke again.
"Soooo, who was that note for?" She asked in a joking manner. Travis just laughed and covered his face. She nudged his shoulder. "Come on! Tell me!" she demanded.
"Promise you won't tell anybody?"
"Promise."
"It was for Sal."
Monica's jaw dropped at the confession. She closed her mouth after a moment and then spoke. "Honestly, that checks out."
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Travis exclaimed. "Oh, nothing..." She said dramatically. Travis hit her slightly on the shoulder and they both burst out laughing.
"I've missed you, Phelps."
"I've missed you too."
~~~~~~Time Skip~~~~~~
Travis and Monica went back inside when 8:00 hit and made their way to their bunks. Monica and Ashley sat on the top bunk, Monica's arm around Ash. Travis smiled at the two. He still couldn't be disgusted by them, even if he wanted to be. Especially after listening Monica talk about Ash while they were on the stairs together. She told Travis a story about how when Ash met Monica's mother, they made cookies while dancing to music together. Monica had a good relationship with her mom, so it's no surprise that her mom got along with Ash.
"Hey Travis." said a voice coming from the top bunk. Travis looked up to Sal and smiled. "Hey." he replied. Sal jumped from the top bunk onto Travis's mattress. "I saw you talking to Monica. You guys still get along?" he asked. Travis smiled and nodded. Sal placed a hand on Travis's shoulder. "I'm glad." he said. Travis got flustered at the touch. "I am too." he replied.
Travis looked out of the window. The sky was dark but the moon and stars lit up the night. Trees crowded the area past the campfire. There seemed to be a small break in the treeline with a gravel path. He couldn't see much past that though.
"Hey Sal?"
"Yeah?"
"What do you think is out there? Past the treeline." he asked. Sal shrugged. "I don't know, wanna find out?" he said. Travis thought for a moment. What if his dad found out that he snuck off? He'd be dead for sure. But Travis was all the way in Ohio. He surly wouldn't find out as long as they don't get caught. Julia slept in another cabin, so he didn't have to worry about her.
"Sure, why not?" he replied.
So, it was decided. They decided to go an hour after the time that the lights had to be out. They waited and waited. Julia announced lights out and headed back to her cabin. The lights went out and Sal sat on the bottom bunk with Travis. "Just an hour to go." Sal whispered. Travis chuckled softly and nodded. "Trav, I'm really proud of you for getting through the whole Harlo thing." he whispered taking Travis's hand. Travis smiled and held his hands back.
"When 11:00 hits, get ready to run." Sal said.
Travis just smiled and looked out the window. 'Let's do this' he thought.
