unexpected encounter

2017

The ceiling, a familiar view. Too familiar.

I roll over onto my side, my eyes not yet adjusted to the light coming from the window whose curtains I always forget to close.

I subconsciously reach for my phone tiredly, it's a habit I know I should probably stop. The screen lights up, displaying the default wallpaper I've been too indecisive to change to anything else.

I absentmindedly scroll through the usual socials and what not, not that I have a huge presence online anyway.

Mornings are always the same, they have been ever since I left.

I eventually drag myself out of bed, already wearing the outfit I was planning to go out with. It's just sweats and a diy cropped tank from an old shirt I made sometime when I was still in highschool.

It's always been hard to get rid of things from back then, but I try not to be sentimental.

My eyes droop as I push my hair back and out of my face, just for it to go right back into place again.

My phone reads 11 a.m., but it feels like 6.

I find some who knows how old leftover takeout in the back of my fridge and after a half assed inspection decide that it's edible. I don't have much to do today, maybe some cleaning or something else semi productive.

I move over to the big floor to ceiling window and take in the view.

Seoul, beautiful. Something about the towering buildings, the Han river and the mountains just visible in the distance, the groups of people that look so small from up here, it makes all the noise worth it. You get used to it anyway.

I breathe in, letting my mind drift off. Little moments of peace like this are nice, I feel like I don't give myself enough of them.

I'm about to turn around when I spot something on the roof of a building.

I nearly missed it, since it was on a corner almost out of view. A curse.

The softness in my eyes hardens immediately, I squint to get a better look at it. It can't be more than a second grade, I could probably exorcize it from here.

I go to my kitchen window and open it, leaning outside a bit to make it easier to target the curse.

I watch it closely, I doubt there's only one of them considering it seems like a low grade curse, but I can't see or sense any others.

It's not huge, it almost looks like a rabbit, but it's a bright yellow colour and it almost looks like a stuffed animal. I send a strike of cursed energy its way, aiming for its head.

It's a relatively strong strike, meant to take the curse out in one go. It's blown back, and for a split second I thought I exorcized it, but then it gets back up.

Something is weird about it, it's cursed energy output is off, almost like that of a shikigami where the cursed energy isn't quite its own.

The strangest part is that it feels familiar.

It stares right at me, bouncing side to side slightly. It's not attacking, which is throwing me off a little. I decide to just go and check it out.

The building it's on is a recreational facility for some sports club, with a metal fence around the roof. A weird place for a curse to be.

I leave my apartment and take the elevator down to the lobby.

It's a nice day, which seems wrong considering what I'm doing right now.
