Spring Break, part 1

When it came to your first college Spring Break, there was only one option. Florida.
Matilda Hayden had spent three Spring Breaks skiing in Vermont when she was in high school, and she was ready for a change of scenery. Connecticut, as of late, had been unforgiving. It was piercingly cold and dry, and quite frankly, Matty was tired of it. She craved the sun. She needed the sun. She was so desperate for sun that she was perfectly willing to kiss Robert goodbye while he headed north to snowboard, and she gladly piled in Briar's family car, allowing it to whisk her away to the palm trees and turquoise waters.
"Aren't you supposed to be like clinging to each other in the honeymoon stage?" Charlotte joked as they stuffed their luggage in the trunk.
Matty simply rolled her eyes and reminded Charlotte that she and Robert were taking things slow. No labels yet. This comment had earned Matty an eye roll from Charlotte in return.
Yes, Matty was well aware that the whole "no labels" was precisely what had aided to her getting her heartbroken a year ago, but this time was different. She had learned from her years wasted on Logan. She was going to take her time because- Well, let's face it. She was terrified of falling in love again and would prolong putting her heart through that for as long as possible. But she was also not going to waste her time if there wasn't potential.
I just need a few months. Maybe three or five or... I don't know. I'll just know when I'm ready. That was what she said whenever her best friends, or her invading thoughts, came knocking.
All that to say, Matty had no reservations about spending a week away from each other during Spring Break. She fully trusted Robert- and had already triple checked no girls were joining his group for Spring Break. And she had had a hard enough time opening her heart up to Robert. No other boy was going to be catching her attention this Spring Break.

"I love the Ritz," Charlotte sighed contently as she laid out on the lounger underneath the private cabana they had reserved. "There is genuinely no other way to vacation."
Matty nodded her head in agreement while her finger idly sifted through the different magazines that had been laid out for them. There was a wide variety of gossip, home, food, and- Ah yes, fashion. Matty eagerly picked up this month's issue of Vogue while she settled onto the lounger beside Charlotte.
The humidity was a welcome reprieve from the arid air of the North East. And her skin was soaking up every last bit of the warm rays of sun. It was truly paradise- the caw of the seagulls hovering overhead mixed with the carefree laughter of young adults on the beach. Meanwhile, her senses were overwhelmed with the scent of sunscreen, the ocean, and whatever alcoholic concoction Lottie had made up moments before.
