At the age of 12, I decided to download an app called Amino, which was endorsed by my favorite animator YouTuber, WolfyChu. As someone I admired, I assumed it was a safe app for people my age. Little did I know, this would turn out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
It all began when I joined a chat called "Light Minute," where a group of users were engaged in a heated argument about something I can't quite recall. The users in the chat had usernames like M&M, KayWhyEss, European Enslaver, Sulfurixs, and Gills.
Out of sheer curiosity, I joined the chat, drawn in by the loud chaos of the argument. "No, you guys don't understand! She wants me!" insisted KayWhyEss.
"She's not real," retorted M&M, sounding exasperated as if they had discussed this before.
"I can work around that!"
The argument continued among the chat participants until I requested to join, which prompted a green notification for the chat host. The arguing briefly ceased, and the silence felt awkward. So, I decided to introduce myself with a simple "Hello."
"Hi!" greeted the host, KayWhyEss, in a friendly tone. European Enslaver then chimed in, "Why do you sound like that?"
I was taken aback by the question. "Sound like what?"
"You sound like you're in the 6th grade. Where are your parents?"
Offended, my voice started to rise, "I AM in the 6th grade. Do you have a problem with that?"
"'Do you have a problem with that?' Shut up. Your username is KittyLover277. I have a problem with your existence on this app," she mocked.
I had just joined, and I was already being cyberbullied. All I had said was "Hello"! Feeling frustrated, I recalled a comeback I had seen in a Gacha Life Mini Movie video in the past. "I would slap you, but then that would be animal abuse!" I chuckled to myself, thinking it would show her.
There was a momentary silence in the chat before it erupted into collective laughter. At the time, I thought they were laughing with me, but in hindsight, they were laughing at me.
"You have a picture of a CAT GIRL as your profile picture, I don't want to hear it from—" But before she could finish her sentence, my screen began to glitch. What's going on? The voices of the users were slurring and lagging, the stray pixels cluttered my screen, everything was so distorted that I couldn't see anything. Then suddenly the glitching seized.
The members of the chat were stunned, it showed in their quizzical voices. "What just happened? Guys, my screen just glitched, like— really bad." Sulfurixs informed. "Mine too." M&M added. Everyone else in the chat, including myself spoke in agreement.
"Amino is probably just tweaking again." M&M suggested, was this an often thing that happened on this app? I wondered.
"Wait, who is that?" The user Grills typed in chat, what were they talking about? That was until I noticed that they were referring to a mysterious user with a Pokémon profile picture of a Joltion, now suddenly within' the voice chat.
KayWhyEss sounded confused, "I don't remember you requesting to be in my VC. How did you get in?"
The user remained quiet for a while before a raspy static-like voice echoed through their mic, "So.... What... are you guys.... talking... about?"
An eerie silence carried through the VC. "What?" One of the members said with confusion, then I heard a bang outside my window.
I sat alone in the dimly lit bedroom, my eyes turning away from the glow of my phone screen. My breath caught in my throat as an icy chill crawled up my spine. In an instant, the screen turned black, swallowing the room in an oppressive void. I heard a voice suddenly speak up from the dark of my room, "I heard you were in the 6th grade..."
I gulped, my heart rate sped up as I looked around frantically, the voice seemed to be coming from the corners of my walls, "Tell me... are you.... 11 or 12? Hehehe, are you...fond of feet pics?"
What? What was it talking about?
