A gray tabby she-cat stealthily approaches a black sparrow, its feathers fluttering in the cold breeze. With a swift shake of her haunches, she pounces without warning, her leap silent and deadly. Unaware of its impending fate, the sparrow sees nothing before it meets its demise, blood pooling around it. The she-cat chuckles softly and delicately licks the sparrow to ensure it is untainted. She then grips it by the scruff and drags it back to camp.
At camp, she is greeted by a flame-colored tom named Firestar. "Well done, Moonfall," Firestar purrs, pressing himself against the tabby. She affectionately nudges her leader's shoulder before depositing her prey to the fresh-kill pile. Turning to Firestar, she mews her gratitude, dipping her head respectfully. Firestar smiles and weaves around her, nudging her towards the nursery.
In the nursery, Lilykit is engrossed in play with the other kits. They had all returned to camp after a grueling journey to the mountains, and Lilykit had quickly earned her place in the clan. After all, who could resist such an adorable kit?
"Depart and nourish Lilykit," Firestar commanded, and Moonfall obediently set off towards the nursery, where she saw Daisy lounging with Ferncloud by her side. Both she-cats looked up as Moonfall approached, and they smiled warmly. Ferncloud flicked her tail towards the treacly, signaling for Moonfall to proceed. Three kits emerged from the nesting area, one of them being Lilykit, a brown tabby with white fur that glimmered in the light. The others were Cherrykit and her brother Molekit.
All the kits came to a halt, and Lilykit gleamed with joy as she gazed at her adoptive mother, rushing towards her and nuzzling against her forelegs.
"Moonfall!" she exclaimed excitedly, and Moonfall responded with a gentle purr, inclining her head and tenderly licking the she-kit's head. With a nod of acknowledgment towards Ferncloud and Daisy, Moonfall then lifted Lilykit into her paws, carrying her towards a pool of sunlight beside the towering high rock.
Tenderly, Moonfall lowered herself and stretched out her belly, inviting Lilykit to drink, even though she had already been weaned. Lilykit hadn't received enough milk from her biological mother, who happened to be Moonfall's sister, but let's keep that our little secret.
Deeper into the forest, a handsome and regal tortoiseshell tom strolled, his eyes gleaming like pools of gold amidst the shadows. A smug expression played upon his muzzle as it twitched with anticipation. "At last," he breathed and settled himself among the prickly brambles, luxuriously stretching out and baring his belly to the expanse of sky overhead, where the rustling leaves created a soothing melody. He lay there, seemingly asleep, scheming and weaving an intricate tapestry of deceit to unravel the fabric that held the clans together.
The harbinger of solar oblivion had descended.
