Alexander's POV
The penthouse office on the top floor of Sterling Hotels felt like a fortress, shielding me from the chaos below. Yet, the weight of my own solitude pressed upon me as I stared at the cityscape through tinted windows.
A stack of paperwork loomed on my desk, a mountain of responsibilities that did little to distract from the hollowness within. My mind, a battleground of memories, churned with the echoes of a love I had lost.
The door swung open, shattering the fragile peace of my solitude. My assistant, Jessica, entered cautiously. "Mr. Sterling, there's someone here for a job interview."
My gaze, hardened by years of mistrust, met hers. "Send them in."
Minutes later, Emily Turner stood before me, a hopeful stranger in a realm where hope seldom thrived. The scent of her determination clashed with the sterile air of the office.
"What's your name?" I demanded, my tone harsh, the product of a mood fouler than the city's polluted air.
"Emily Turner, sir," she replied, a tremor in her voice. Her eyes, resilient yet vulnerable, met mine.
I dismissed her résumé with a disdainful glance. "I don't have time for charity cases, Miss Turner. This is a place of business, not a refuge for the destitute."
---"Miss Turner," I continued, my voice a calculated edge, "I run a business, not a charity. We don't hire people with no experience and no place in this world."
She held her ground, the spark in her eyes undiminished by my harsh words. "I may not have the experience you seek, but I'm willing to learn, Mr. Sterling. Give me a chance, and I'll prove my worth."
My gaze narrowed, testing the mettle behind her words. The air crackled with an unspoken challenge, a clash of worlds that neither of us had anticipated.
"You're wasting my time," I declared, a mask of indifference concealing the turmoil beneath. "Leave, and don't let the door hit you on your way out."
Emily Turner, however, refused to crumble under the weight of rejection. As she exited my office, the door closing behind her with a hushed finality, I couldn't shake the unsettling notion that our paths had intersected for a reason—a reason that lingered in the air like a haunting melody, waiting to unfold.
Little did I know, the echoes of our first encounter were but the prelude to a symphony of emotions that would reverberate through the corridors of Sterling Hotels, reshaping the very foundations of my guarded heart.
