The next morning, Nancy woke up, feeling slightly sore from her long drive. She got out of bed and went to take a shower. When she emerged from the bathroom, the aroma of chocolate chip waffles filled her nose, making her mouth water.
"Morning, Hannah!" she sang as she sat down at the table across from her father, Carson.
" Someone is in a good mood. I made waffles with KoKo Kringle chunks in it." Hannah said setting the plate down.
She ate with her father as he read the newspaper.
" So Nance, what are you doing today?" he asked.
" Well, Ned and I are going to Scoop's to get some hot cocoa." she said cutting a waffle.
" Scoop's? I didn't know they had cocoa," Hannah said.
" Winter special. " Nancy !managed to say through a mouthful of waffles.
She put her empty plate in the sink and fed Togo before going upstairs to finish getting ready. Her phone vibrated and she answered.
" Hey, Ned. I'm almost ready!" she said checking her hair in the mirror. It reminded her of a certain time with her mother when she'd play dress up and would adjust her plastic tiara.
"Okay, I'll come pick you up so you don't have to warm your car up."
" Thank you. See you soon!" she said ending the call.
Twenty minutes later, Nancy and Ned were on the way to Scoop's. Ned drove slowly trying to avoid rough ice patches, making the drive longer.
" So how long do you have off for Winter break?"
"Three weeks. How long before your next mystery?" Ned joked.
" Not sure, when duty calls I supose. "
" Let me find a parking spot," Ned muttered.
Ned held the door open and they both walked down and sat in a booth. A waitress walked over to them and held out a notebook.
" What can I get ya?" she asked.
" Two hot cocoas, please." Nancy said.
The waitress nodded and took the order back.
" We need to do this more often, you have no idea how nervous I get when you're away." Ned said.
"Don't worry, we will do this every chance we get." she replied.
After they finished paying for their cocoa, Ned and Nancy got back into his car and started driving.
" Thanks for coming today, it was fun." Nancy said.
Ned turned to reply when he hit a patch of black ice. He lost control of the car and it flipped. His heart raced as he tried to protect Nancy. All went black.
