May 21, 2015 — Beckett Goes Home
It's been a rough 24 hours. Two hours after they found out that their baby had no heartbeat, Kate was in a private room getting a procedure done to make sure she didn't get an infection from the miscarriage. He was stuck in a recovery room. Nurses came in and out every few minutes to make sure things were prepared for his wife once she got out of the operation. When she came back, she was still a little out of it, but the minute she saw him she started to sob. He did too.
They didn't speak a word the rest of the night. They went back and forth between sobbing and sleeping. About five hours after the operation, Beckett had started to feel cramping in her lower abdomen. She was given a heating pad and the two finally settled for the night. Now it's morning and she's being discharged today. They haven't spoken a word to one another today. When they first woke up, Beckett went to the bathroom and freshened up before changing. Once she was ready to go, she signed her discharge forms and then the two were on their way home.
"I texted my dad. He's going to meet us at the loft. I figure we sit the three of them down and explain what's going on." She tells him. "Are you sure you want to do that now? You can get some rest and we can focus on telling them later if you'd like." He offer. She shakes her head, "I just want to get it over with." She reasons. He doesn't say anything else. They pull into the parking garage and grab their things before heading up to the loft. "You sure you're ready?" He asks her.
She nods. "We're gonna have to do it sooner or later." He unlocks the door and opens it where Martha, Alexis, and Jim sit in the living room with concerned looks. "Where's Avery?" She doesn't mean for it to be her first question, but she immediately has the urge to see her baby. "She's in the playpen in the office napping." Alexis answers. Kate nods and goes to the office where her ten month old is fast asleep on her belly. She smiles, but suddenly tears fill her eyes. She needs to talk to her family. And then she needs to snuggle with her baby.
She sees Castle has moved their family to the kitchen table. "I got you some water." He tells her. She nods in appreciation before they sit across from the three curious minds. "So, Darlings, ready to fill us in?" Martha quips. Castle sighs and gives his mother a look. Her demeanor changes, "Richard, what is it?" She asks. Beckett speaks up, "Around Castle's birthday, I found out I was pregnant." Beckett says. She can see the shock on all three of their faces as they try to register the words that just came out of her mouth.
"Was?" Alexis asks. Beckett tries to suppress her tears. "Our 'date' yesterday was really a sonogram appointment." Castle says. "Only when we got there, the doctor noticed on the sonogram that the baby didn't have a heartbeat. I miscarried." It's the first time she's said the words since they found out. She notices all of their faces drop in sadness. "Oh, Bug, I'm so sorry." Jim says as he stands and walks over to hug his daughter. She lets a few tears escape as Martha and Alexis join on condolences. "I'm going to go lay down." She announces.
She excuses herself and goes into the bedroom where she crawls under the covers. About fifteen minutes later, she feels her husband crawl in behind her. "Mother says to let her know if we need anything." He tells her. She nods. He kisses her cheek, "What are you thinking?" He asks her. She turns on her back and doesn't try to hide her tears. "I just don't understand what I did wrong, Castle. I did everything the same." She cries. He sighs and wraps his arms around her. "It wasn't your fault, Kate." He whispers. She sobs and he lets his tears fall too.
