Inside the box... was another, smaller box. Inside that box was a wooden box. If there was another smaller box inside I was about to chuck it against the wall....
I went to open it but my cell phone rang, Uncle Ren was finally getting back to me."Uncle Ren, do you know where Gram went?" I asked, hurriedly before even saying hello.
"Hi, Evaline. Gram is fine. Okay, I spoke with Beth, and she's fine." Uncle Ren replied, I didn't quite get what was going on.
"Why does everyone keep saying that? I can't find Gram and everyone seems so.... So fucking unbothered by Gram missing! It's starting to irritate me that you and Aunt Beth don't really seem to give a fuck." I let out... I usually never curse around my family... it's just not something I've done. But I was so annoyed, confused, and just fed up with the run around I was getting.
"Evaline, calm down. I guess Gram didn't explain. Listen, she's fine. Just open the gift, and more will be explained, I promise." Uncle Ren was calm... very calm. I tried to calm myself. Uncle Ren was a good Uncle, He never missed any of my birthdays, even though he couldn't always be around. Aunt Beth was around the most, especially when my cousin's were young.
I didn't see Uncle Vincent, Aunt Beth's husband much.. But he worked a lot and was always traveling far for work.
I never really knew how Aunt Beth and Uncle Vincent met, at least I don't remember. However Uncle Ren and Aunt Maria was a different story, Aunt Maria's mother and my Gram were good friends. I guess our families go back a long way. Maria grew up with my mom, Aunt Beth, and Uncle Ren. I guess they were high school sweethearts and married in college."Sorry... I'm just... stressed. But mostly confused." I said to Uncle Ren.
"We'll talk later... just open the gift Evaline." He said before hanging up. He seemed off.. Not quite himself. I sighed and set my cell phone down on Gram's coffee table. I picked up the wooden box. I took a better look at the markings on it. It was some strange design. A crest, I think. Like a family crest. I opened it, finally being able to see what was inside. On a black velvet cushion was a key on a chain. It looked old, but it was very detailed. The gem in the center of the key shimmered. I picked it up and it seemed to shine a little bit. The chain wasn't too long, but as I put it on I noticed it was a little long. As soon as I clasped the back and let it rest around my neck.. The key started to glow.
A bright blinding light emerged from the key, It expanded, and surrounded my body. I couldn't see anything, nothing but white. My ears started to ring, and the light was slowly sucked back into the key from where it came. I looked up from the key to see my surroundings had changed. I didn't recognize where I was at all. I was in a living room, a living room that was modern, dim lighting, the large windows showed nothing but darkness outside them. And then I heard footsteps.
"Beth! She's here, like you said." A gentleman's voice said. I looked towards the staircase in the foyer, and there was the voice's vessel... a tall man in a suit. I knew him. Uncle Vincent- Aunt Beth's husband. He looked at me and then smiled.
"Evaline, good to see you." He said, simply.
"Vincent, don't scare the girl. She's just traveled between worlds. It's her first time. Give her a moment." Aunt Beth was suddenly beside him, urging him not to move toward me yet.
"I.... uh... what the hell is going on?" I managed to ask. Aunt Beth chuckled a little and approached me. She embraced me in a hug and petted my hair.
"My sweet Niece. This... is.. Well. Let's have some tea and talk, shall we?" My Aunt snapped her fingers and a woman came from the kitchen. She bowed and then scurried back to the kitchen. My Uncle calmly walked over to the large sofa and sat down. He was elegant in his movements, but he also seemed disinterested in everything around him.
