Ennea stirred, sunlight just starting to filter through the curtains. Something felt... off. Turning, she saw Sebastian beside her, hand outstretched as if seeking hers in sleep. A jolt of confusion and something warmer, fluttered in her chest. Gently, she pulled back, not wanting to wake him.
Her head throbbed, the events of the night a swirling, intoxicating blur. Had they...? No. But the bed, the closeness... a blush crept onto her cheeks.
Sensing movement, Sebastian groaned. "Ugh, my head... Ennea? What time..." He sat up, blinking sleepily.
"Morning," she replied, her voice tight. "I... why are we... did we..." She stammered, unable to finish the question.
Understanding dawned. "You lost your key. I carried you in here..." He reassured her, "But absolutely nothing more happened." He held her gaze, sincerity and a hint of something unsaid in his eyes.
Ennea nodded, relief warring with a strange disappointment. Suddenly, she found the floor very interesting. "Ah. Good. Right. Well, found my key..." she fumbled in her pocket, desperate for a distraction. "Probably should freshen up..."
She stood, gathering her shoes. Sebastian watched, admiration and a hint of regret coloring his gaze. "Er, right. Let's meet by the lobby, yeah? Half hour?" His voice was thick, a mix of hangover and unspoken emotion.
Ennea left with a nod and a quick smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. As the door clicked shut, Sebastian fell back onto the bed, burying his face in a pillow. "You utter fool," he groaned. His heart had been pounding from the moment he'd woken to her so close, and now... now things were a tangled mess.
Across the hall, Ennea splashed cold water on her face, the shock of it mirroring the shock to her system. She fished through her bag, downing a headache potion with a grimace. This wasn't like her. An Unspeakable's focus was legendary... and she'd let hers slip because of... what? Shared laughter? A lingering touch? She sighed.
Back in his room, Sebastian scrubbed a hand over his face. This wasn't some teenage crush, he was a grown man, and she... she was his best friend. But friendship didn't usually come with this heady mix of easy laughter and a heart that wouldn't calm down.
"Focus," he said aloud, the word a plea as much as a command. There were secrets to uncover, a mission that demanded their full attention. With a final glance in the mirror, Sebastian headed out the door, pushing the simmering emotions to the back of his mind.
Ennea was waiting, her bag slung over her shoulder, her usual air of quiet competence back in place. As they set off, their unspoken agreement hung in the air – business first, Budapest at night had been an aberration. But under the surface, a current of something new pulsed between them, a shift they couldn't yet name.
Seeing Ennea in the lobby, Sebastian's breath caught. In the clear morning light, her hazel hair was caught up in a simple twist, the white of her blouse highlighting the soft curve of her neck. He forced his gaze away, scolding himself for the unexpected rush of warmth he felt.
"Ready?" she asked, her professional tone at odds with the faint flush on her cheeks.
"Right," he managed, clearing his throat. They walked in silence, the air between them crackling with unsaid things. His mind fixated on their dance, the warmth of her in his arms, a memory at odds with their usual easy camaraderie. He knew he had to focus, but it felt like the harder he tried, the more aware he became of simply being near her.
They tried to fill the silence with observations about the waking city, but the awkwardness hung heavy. Finally, the train station came into view, and Sebastian scanned the crowds for László. Spotting the glint of a silver ring on a thick finger, he pointed.
"Ready for more adventure?" László greeted them, the Hungarian accent coloring his words. A knowing glint in his eyes hinted that last night hadn't gone unnoticed. "Mm.. I can tell you had a proper taste of Budapest last night."
