"The murder of the French politician... there are gaps in the CCTV footage, how that happened and how the offender bypassed security we still do not know." My boss Marshall stood in front of Niall and I, giving us a briefing late in the evening, it had come through as an emergency. "We also don't know how someone could have gotten into the building with any sort of weapon." He looked between us. "This is your top priority, we have people, politicians, and families that are demanding answers from me, and I need you to give me them."
It was late on a Friday evening, we had all been here since nine this morning and it was just after midnight. We typically didn't have to stay this late but there had been a very high-profile murder that we immediately had to look into and be briefed on, even if we didn't start investigating it now, we had to know about it. Marshall had told Niall and I to stay even later. We had been here a few extra hours, giving ourselves headaches as we looked into the same killings, neither of us making any progress on them.
It was the only thing on my mind. Winter breaking into my flat, threatening me, threatening my dog, so that she could get me to delete the evidence on her. Every time I thought back to it I wondered if there was something I could have done differently to not have to delete it. But it was done now, it was all gone and I had to start from scratch.
I wanted to go for the people above her. She told me once that I wouldn't want to know what would happen if her boss found out she let someone go. Which gave me the information that she wasn't just some crazy serial killer—well, she was, but she was under the control of someone else. And whoever that person was clearly hadn't taken well to the fact she had let someone get away. I kept seeing the bruises covering her, black and blue, dark and violent, a punishment for not killing someone on time.
It was likely I would run into her again, it seemed to be a recurring theme in my life now and I was going to use it to my advantage. I wasn't going to go after her, clearly I had nothing on her and she was always going to be able to get her way out of it, but I was going to go for the boss, the people in charge. They were the real bad guys, she was just a puppet for them to use to do their dirty work.
"Right." Niall spoke, bringing me out of my thoughts, he was doodling on his notepad with his pen, trying to find way to stay awake. I was sure he had almost been asleep before Marshall came over. "Do you think it's the same person that we've been looking into?"
"I don't know." Boss shrugged, inhaling through his nose.
"Well what use is it if we end up looking for two different people." I pointed out. "If you think one person killed these guys, and another killed this French guy... why look into them both?"
"Because it could very well be the same person." he said back to me like it had been a stupid question. "A brutal murder, an important public figure murdered in broad daylight with not a single witness," he stated, pointing out that it was pretty similar to the past few murders that we'd investigated. "The only difference is this time CCTV has been tampered with. Every other time there has been an individual who has gone in and out and somehow has missed every camera, or it was committed somewhere that there is no CCTV."
