Chapter 4: Hexplanes

Luxanna Crownguard – Flight Logbook

Day 1:

Practice flight on new Gladiator. Took off at 14:22. Completed practice at 16:10.

Day 2:

Mission to guard cargo ship headed for EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 08:00. Met four enemy fighters and two bombers while with the ship. Shot down two fighters. Jinx shot down the others. Cargo ship arrived safely in port. Returned to squadron base at 11:15.

Day 3:

Mission to guard supply trucks headed from EPZ to Trench Base E4. Took off with Jinx at 12:00. No enemy spotted. Trucks arrived safely at E4. Returned to squadron base at 14:23.

Day 4:

Mission to guard EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 14:00. No enemy spotted. All well at EPZ. Returned to squadron base at 16:13.

Day 5:

Mission to guard supply trucks headed from Trench Base E3 to EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 13:00. Met five enemy fighters and two bombers while with the trucks...

"Just like last time – I'll fly low; you fly high!"

Lux instantly pulled her stick at Jinx's words, pointing the nose of her plane skyward. She followed Jinx as they jetted toward the enemy planes, intercepting them about three miles out from the supply trucks they were guarding. Their planes moved at dizzying speeds; they wouldn't have much time to take out the bombers before they reached the trucks.

As Jinx and Lux fell into their battle positions behind and above the lines of low-flying bombers and high-flying fighters, Lux asked, "Will you be able to take out the bombers before they can land a strike?"

"Easy," Jinx's confident voice chirped through the radio. "You gonna be able to take out more than two of this bunch today?"

Lux grinned, bolstered by her partner's confidence. "My goal is to take out more of them than you do."

"Hah! In your dreams, Searchlight!"

... Shot down three fighters. Jinx shot down two fighters and two bombers. Trucks arrived safely at EPZ. Returned to squadron base at 15:21.

Day 6:

Mission to guard cargo ship headed for EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 09:00. No enemy spotted. Cargo ship arrived safely in port. Returned to squadron base at 13:14.

Day 7:

Mission to guard supply trucks headed from Trench Base E4 to EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 11:00. Met three enemy fighters and two bombers while with the trucks. Shot down two fighters. Jinx shot down one fighter and two bombers. Trucks arrived safely at EPZ. Returned to squadron base at 13:22.

Day 8:

Mission to guard a pair of cargo ships headed for EPZ. Took off with Jinx at 09:00. Met five enemy fighters and two bombers while with the ship. Shot down three fighters. Jinx shot down two fighters and two bombers. Cargo ship arrived safely in port. Returned to squadron base at 12:15...

"Ready to give up on that dream of downing more baddies than me?"

Lux twisted her face into an exaggerated pout as she sprayed a line of red paint onto the tail-end of her plane. She could hear Jinx's paint can hissing a few meters away, and she had no doubt that whatever Jinx drew would be leagues more impressive than her stick-figure-sword-wielding-Aunt-Tianna. "Don't forget that I'm leading us in shooting down fighters," Lux huffed. "I'm starting to think those bombers you keep wiping the floor with are simply bad flyers – you've been picking off the easy targets."
