Lafayette strolls nonchalantly into his first class. He has left behind France, his roots, to become something new. He searches for something he does not know yet. Possibly it's a place where he can belong. A place where he will be known.
The room is crowed with students, the teacher not yet here. He takes a seat in an empty spot in front of a few rowdy guys. Sitting beside him is a girl, her nose in a book.
The guys behind him joke and laugh loudly, but as soon as the professor walks in, they quiet. One makes a quip to his friends about the man who stands before his students, "He's bald. He's bald and torturing people who have hair!"
Though Lafayette is still getting the grip of English, it pulls a chuckle from him. Indeed, their professor was bald, and seemed to be in a mood. One of the guys behind him whispers back, "Shut it Alexander, he'll give us more homework if he hears that."
Lafayette's attention catches on the girl beside him. She rolls her eyes at the commentary going behind her. He looks at the book she set down, reading the title, 'The Princess Bride.' The girl shuts her book, slipping it into her bag. Awkwardly he realizes he had been staring, and looks away, flustered when she glanced back at him.
The professor straightens his shoulder, and says with a proud voice, "I am Professor Washington, welcome to those who have transfered this semester. To those who have been here since the start of the year, Hello again."
People murmur back in reply, and the professor starts the lecture, pacing back and forth as he does. Lafayette reaches into his back, placing out his computer and starts writing notes. There's a light sound of chatter, specifically from the guys who sit behind him. Most people take notes or write down their assignments into their calendar for later.
Professor Washington's voice rings out as he speaks. He has an air of determination and confidence, though he seems old and tired. Lafayette takes a liking to the man, though it seems some are bored already. Maybe it's the way the professor talks, his voice odd enough to notice. Possibly it is because it's a history class, but Lafayette has always been interested in it.
He seems to have missed much, because this unit the professor teaches goes over worldly things during the 1700's. He asks the class, "Why, overall, was the French monarch overthrown?"
Lafayette couldn't help but smile. This, he knew. When the room falls silent in answer, he raises his hand.
The professors sight lands on him and smiles, "Ah, yes. You, young man."
Lafayette's accent comes out smoothly and clear as he says, "The monarchs did not pay attention to the people and their needs, and so they were overthrown."
The professor smiles and inclines his head, "It seems you will already know a good amount of this unit, what is your name?"
Lafayette is suprised that the roofer would care to answer him, but he replies, "It's Gilbert de Lafayette, sir."
The professor nods and moves on. The girl beside him glances at him curiously but doesn't say anything.
