I clasped my handmade gold belt around my waist to cinch in Nari's gift as I looked for the golden clips to decorate my updo hair.

I was almost done.

"¡Lucía, apúrate!" Mom hollered from the living room. "¡Ryan llega en cinco minutos!"

Lucía, hurry up! Ryan's gonna be here in five minutes.

I always contemplated proposing a law that made it illegal for people to ask you to hurry up, it only made the person who was late clumsy and dumb and caused them to make mistakes.

That was my exact inner monologue as I dropped my polvo de hadas on the bathroom sink countertop. Marble and glittery highlight definitely clashed together.

"¡Ahora voy!" I yelled back as I tried to put the sponge top back into place. I had to glue it back to the vial full of the shiny white powder.

I'm coming!

When I walked out of the bathroom and into my room I grabbed my brown fur coat which did not combine with my dress and took my overnight bag.

"Por favor no te olvides de hacerte la sorprendida cuando abras los regalos que Nico y Tati...

Please don't forget to pretend you're surprised when you open your gifts because Nico and Tati...

I completed, "todavía creen en Papá Noel. Sí, ya sé, mami."

Still believe in Santa. Yes. I know, mom.

A knock on the front door reverberated across our home.

"Ya llegó Ryan. Sube tus cosas al carro y yo me encargo de la comida," mom replied as she trudged to open the door.

Ryan's already here. Get in the car and I'll take care of the food.

"Te puedo ayudar a cargar la comida," I suggested as my godfather's husband came into view, shivering.

I can help you load up the food.

"Mejor no nos arriesguemos a que se te caiga algún tupper y nos quedemos sin cena de Navidad," Ryan exclaimed as he greeted my mom, making her chuckle.

We better not risk you dropping any tupperware or else we won't have a Christmas dinner.

I knew I was clumsy, they just didn't need to crack jokes about it.

"Mejor ve y espera en el auto," mom took one of the shawls she had knitted for me and looped it around my shoulders.

It's best you go wait in the car.

"Puedo hacerlo sola."

I can do it myself.

Her eyes dimmed a little but her warm hand caressed my face with such affection I smiled at her and I kissed her cheek.
