Dinner Bell

At night I ring your bell to come home

It rests neatly in the palm of my hand

I never need to shake the bell

As your appetite always beats me

Five o'clock on the dot time to eat

Warm feet pitter patter across the tile

You make a habit of letting me know

It's five and it's time for dinner

Even if it's two, three, four o'clock

It's always time to eat!

Your favourite time of day to scarf

Down dinner like a starving piglet

I rarely ever ring the dinner bell

The dead of night, the height of noon

Odd times, peculiar times

Even times, right times, wrong times

You let me know it's time to eat

How exciting! First meal of the day!

Half past eight, quarter past nine

Five 'til one, ten 'til six

It's the first meal of the day

The most exciting time to be awake

I don't ring the dinner bell anymore

You don't let me know when it's time

The kitchen is absent of your footsteps

Hollow of your never-ending appetite

And completely vacant of you

Lately I've been ringing the dinner bell

For no one but myself to hear

Maybe if I listen close enough

To the swaying brrring, bong, brrring

I'll be able to hear you one last time

Maybe you'll come home again

For one last night of feasting
