<>"You be safe!" Mom smiled as she hugged me.
"I will, take care of Grandpa." I faintly smiled.
"I cannot believe my baby girl is going off to war!" Dad sighed as he hugged me.
"Dad.. you know I have to." I admit wiping tears away.
"Don't be late soldier." Dad spoke sternly.
"Yes Sergeant." I saluted him waiting for him to salute back.
When he did, he nodded and I walked into the airport. I was being deployed to Helmand, Afghanistan. This was all a big step.. but it was a step I was willing to take.

The plane landed on the landing strip in the middle of the desert. You couldn't even see a path. I looked around to see everyone immediately grabbing their bags. I followed their leads because this didn't look like it was their first rodeo. We were then forced to carry our bags to our bunk house.
We walked a total of 4 miles to our hidden bunked location. It was hot, I wasn't even used to any type of weather like this. I realized everyone came with canteens and seems like they were prepared for a walk like this. It seemed like everything they did I was one step behind. When we finally arrived I was drained. I went in there to find there were six other cot in my room.
I set mine up, and then taped up a photo of my family. It was my brother, my father and grandpa in uniform they were what kept me going at least. My brother told me books were what kept him sane most of the time so my father packed me the 'The raven' to read. I sat in my cot trying to remain as comfortable as I could.
"Well hello there." A man spoke from above me.
"Hello?" I greeted.
"Im tristan." He greeted placing his hand out.
