Last spring my boyfriend invited me to the temple with his family for Lao New Years. I admired the burgundy and the pop of silver in the Lao Silk Sinh skirt that ran down to my ankles. The silver from the skirt paired well with the silver of the Lao Blouse. The girlfriend in me was happy that his mother leant me her traditional clothing. She seemed excited to help me get ready as she tied a gold belt around my waist pinning the skirt in place. It was after she handed me a pair of gold earrings and a gold necklace with floral detailing, I worried if I was guilty of culture appropriation.
