You decide to go to the supermarket.

Your feet scuff silently on the floor as you walk along the pavement. The day has barely begun, and you've got some time to burn.

The supermarket soon comes into view, and you pick up your pace a little bit.
As you approach the doors, you make a quick mental checklist of everything you need to buy. You can't splurge too much, though.

Your boss doesn't pay you nearly enough to do that.
You grimace at the thought of your boss as you open the doors to the supermarket, and step inside.

Your boss was a rude man.
He knew what power he had over his workers and liked to abuse it as much as he could.
His condescending demeanor had always got on your nerves, but you'd never said anything about it to him.
You were sure he knew, and just as sure that he didn't care.

As you stepped into the store, a worker came into view. She sat behind the counter, doodling on some notebook paper.
The pencil in her hand looked worn and old, and indents from teeth marks riddled the short and uneven eraser.
As she heard the door behind you close, her head shot up in surprise.
Dark circles made themselves at home under her eyes, further adding to her already sleepy expression.

She gave a small wave at you, which you gladly returned.
“Morning!” you said, giving your best grin you could muster.
She gave a small smile, and returned to drawing on her notebook paper.
You grabbed a basket from the stack next to the counter, and began your short little spree.
You walked down the short aisles in the small supermarket.

It was the only one in the city that managed to keep its lights on, and the only store where the food wasn't ridiculously overpriced.
You had a job at a café, where your roomate worked.
It was also where you had met him, not oddly enough.

The café was similar to the city's bakery, with the exception that it was smaller.
You glanced down at your watch, and saw that your shift started soon.
You sucked air through your teeth, and began approaching the checkout.
The girl looked up from the paper she was doodling on, and began ringing up on your items on the register.

You winced as you watched the number on the small screen go up with every item.
After a couple more seconds of torture, the final amount glowed on the dim screen.
You grimaced as you read it.
$27.56
You forked over your money, and left the store with your items.
You had just enough time left to go home and put the groceries away before your shift started. You cringed at the thought of your remaining balance.

You maybe had $17 left before you were broke.
Then, you would have to start borrowing money from your roomate.
How embarassing.

Whatever, at least we have food now…

After you put away your items, you started off in the direction of the café.
