Breaking the ice, the person turned toward me and said, "So... Where are you going?"

I was caught off guard by the unexpected question. It wasn't often that strangers struck up conversations on the bus, and I found myself unsure of how to respond. Should I tell them the truth or keep it? I hesitated, weighing my options.

With a warm smile, I replied, "Oh, just heading out for lunch with my friends, a few blocks away from here. What about you?" I hoped my response was clear enough to maintain some level of privacy while still engaging in the conversation. Yet, the lingering doubt about whether they had noticed me listening to their earlier conversation lingered in the back of my mind. Do they know I was listening?

The person nodded, seemingly satisfied with my answer. "Ah, nice. I'm actually trying out the new ramen shop that just opened this week," they said, their tone casual and friendly.

Their casual tone did little to ease the nagging doubts swirling in my mind. I had overheard them talking about this place earlier, and it was hard to shake off the feeling that they might be testing me. "Oh, really? It seems like I'm also going there. What a coincidence!" I chuckled, trying to act surprised and brush off the idea that I already knew where they were heading.

"Oh? I didn't know the shop was still getting customers! I thought I was the only one visiting," they joked a hint of amusement in their voice.

"I know, right?" I chuckled again, trying to keep the conversation light. Then, shifting gears, I asked, "Do you have any recommendations for what I should try there? I've heard they have some unique dishes."

"Well, all I can say is don't try the spicy ramen. Three people died eating it, no joke, they were poisoned," they responded, their tone suddenly serious.

"Oh, wow, that's concerning," I replied, my mind racing with questions. What kind of place was this, where rumors of poisonous food circulated so freely? Why is that ramen shop still open even after such incidents? Wouldn't it be closed? And most importantly, should I still go to this ramen shop? Why am I overthinking these silly rumors anyway? Maybe they're just coincidences. Who even started these rumors?

"Just curious, maybe it's the spice that got them?" I ventured, trying to keep my tone light and conversational despite the unsettling information.

The person shrugged, a hint of a smirk playing on their lips. "Could be. Some people just can't handle the heat. But who knows? Maybe there's more to the story than we realize."

I nodded, absorbing their words while my mind continued to whirl with uncertainty. "Well, I'll be sure to avoid the spicy stuff then," I said, forcing a chuckle. "Thanks for the warning."
