FireClan has never felt so eerie. Though Deerspring's death affected everyone, they were all reluctant to show it. They couldn't risk Firestar catching them crying. No one wanted to find out what he'd do to them.
Foxleap tiredly placed the squirrel he caught onto the fresh-kill pile, stifling a yawn. It was getting late, and Foxleap was getting ready to head to his nest to sleep. Foxleap had been missing a lot of sleep, so Rye insisted they skip out on their meetup tonight in order for Foxleap to get some rest. As he was padding to the warrior's den, he couldn't help but overhear the commotion in Firestar's den. Crouching to the side of the den, the ginger warrior listened in.
"He was your son, Firestar!" A voice, Flamepelt's voice, shouted. "He was my son! And you murdered him!" Foxleap's ears perked. She couldn't be talking about Lightningtail, right? Surely Firestar wouldn't kill his own son... right?
"A flaw-ridden cat was all he was." Firestar snorted. There was a heartbeat of tense silence from the den.
"A flaw-ridden cat is all you are!" Flamepelt broke the silence with a growl.
"What did you say?!" Firestar boomed. Though Foxleap couldn't see, he could tell his brother was bristling.
"At least Lightningtail and I have a heart! It's what made us perfect!" Flamepelt's voice cracked with grief. With no hesitation, there was the sound of a slash. Flamepelt hissed in pain, her breathing becoming heavy. Foxleap risked a peak inside, his eyes widening at the horror. A large bleeding slash covered Flamepelt's face. Her limbs were scratched as well, causing her legs to give in. The life slowly bled from her eyes as Firestar merely watched.
Cold Waters, he just murdered his mate! Foxleap's heart began to pound, his head spinning. If he's willing to watch his mate bleed out and die, who knows what Firestar would do to Foxleap if he found out about Rye?
Once Flamepelt was dead, Firestar grabbed his dead mate's scruff and tossed her body out of the den. Foxleap's heart pounded, his head spinning. His pawpads dampened. Firestar's ears perked up as he turned around. In a panic, Foxleap dove into the warrior's den, curling into his empty nest. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping this was all a nightmare. But it wasn't.
The night wore on, each passing moment dragging Foxleap deeper into the abyss of terror. But as the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, a sliver of hope pierced the darkness. Perhaps he could be free of Firestar's grip. Perhaps he could run away with Ryefall, never looking back at FireClan again.
