"Once upon a time" is a funny thing. Unless you specifically say what time it was, it could have been any time. But anyway...
Once upon a time, the Troll tribes lived all over. One tribe known as Pop Trolls lived in a happy tree in the middle of a happy forest. You could tell they were happy because they were always smiling and singing. It seemed their carefree days would go on forever. Then giant people known as Bergens came down from the North any happiness they had was stamped out by generations of tragedy and displacement. They coveted the troll's happiness, and what followed was not good. The Pop Trolls' happiness was a great thing, but it could not protect them from being eaten. Nothing could protect them. It seemed they were on their own to defy their cruel fate.
But one night, just a month before the Bergens' horrible holiday, a stranger came into town. A white-skinned man dressed all in black, with wisps of smoke coming off the top of his head. He stood tall and thin by Bergen standards, and his footsteps made no sound. He walked right up to the metal cage built around the Troll Tree, and without any effort, phased through the bars to the inside. He walked right up to the royal pod where the Pop King lived and whispered into it.  "I want to help you."
The king (whose name was Peppy) had been watching his twin daughters play. Poppy, the pink-haired older twin, pinned down Viva, the yellow-haired younger twin, and peppered her face with kisses. The three of them were startled when a strange new voice spoke to them from outside. They saw the giant man peeking through their door, then they saw the man turn into smoke reappear before them, Troll-sized inside the pod. The man introduced himself as Famin Fortune. He claimed he had heard about their troubles and was moved with sympathy. He also claimed to work great miracles. King Peppy asked for proof of this power, so Mr. Fortune once again turned into smoke and went through other pods, alerting the trolls that lived in them.
Finally, he came upon the orphanage, in which there was a little Troll boy named Branch. Poor little Branch had been through so much pain he had lost his color and turned grey. As a wisp of smoke, Mr. Fortune picked him up and took him outside. There, all the Pop trolls watched as Mister Famin Fortune rematerialized and pressed his thumbs against the little grey boys' eyelids. The grey faded away, revealing Branchs' true-blue skin and hair. The other trolls cheered "It's a miracle! It's a miracle!" Branch himself stared at his healed body in shock.
Famin Fortune looked up at King Peppy in his pod with his daughters. "This is a small taste of my power. I can give you so much more if you would trust me." King Peppy looked at the little blue boy, then at his cheering citizens, then at his daughters smiling at the crowd. Then he called down to Famin Fortune "We accept your help!"
A month later, on the morning of the day the Bergens called Trollstice, King Gristle and the Royal Chef were surprised to find the Troll Tree deserted, and their precious Trolls had run away. When they tried to go after them, big scary shadow monsters sprang up and scared them. The Trolls themselves ran underground through the root tunnels. Smoke tendrils pulled them along, protecting and guiding them.
When they finally came out the other side however, it seemed that several children were missing including the miraculous Branch and tiny Princess Poppy. The trolls wanted to go back inside the tunnels to look for them, but Famin Fortune told them "No. It's too dangerous." He promised to find the missing children himself, while the tribe traveled far North to safety.
King Peppy asked Famin Fortune how they could repay him for all he did. He said all he wanted to do was remain their protector. He also told King Peppy that no matter what, they must avoid contact with any other kind of Troll.
King Peppy said to him; "I've heard of other Trolls that act differently from us. I used to hope they might come to rescue us."
"Rescue you?" Famin Fortune shook his head. "I hate to be the one to tell you this but..."
According to Famin, the story was this: The six most numerous tribes once lived in Harmony each practicing their own kind of music. But the other tribes grew jealous of the Pop Trolls popularity. So they, along with a mysterious sub-tribe, drove out the Pop Trolls, and when that wasn't enough, they sought out the dreaded Bergens, and pointed them in the Troll Trees' direction.
"So you see," Mister Fortine concluded, "Those different Trolls are your true enemies. And if they learn you're still alive, they'll attack you all over again."
This made King Peppy and his remaining daughter Viva very sad. But they accepted what Mister Fortune said as the truth.
They went as far north as they could go to the ruins of the old Bergen kingdom. Famin Fortune told King Peppy they could rebuild their civilization here, all they had to do was combine his magic with that of their sacred Pop String. Peppy agreed. Famin Fortune plucked the pink string with his long black fingernail. A fountain of pink light shot out, forming a giant dome the size of a Bergen castle. It was transparent on the inside, yet dark red on the outside. And Mister Fortune assured the Pop Trolls that only they could get in and out without his help. He also promised to on day find their missing children, including the Crown Princess, and bring them back.
And so, the Pop Troll Tribe were once again content and carefree. They resumed their happy music and made up new holidays to celebrate throughout the year. And they made a point of hugging each other once an hour, to remind themselves how good it feels to be alive.
And they lived happily ever after.

But not really.
Because twenty years to the day of the escape, something happened that turned everything on its head.

Chapter Header is my oc Famin Fortune. He's a mix between Pitch Black, King Magnifico, and the original Dracula. I imagine him to be voiced by Jude Law.
