One of the first things I had learned when arriving to hell was to ignore that basic human need of socializing, and warmth. Getting close to people here often leaves you with a knife in the back of your head, or the loss of your own soul. Either way, it was best to avoid people in general. And some days I would feel so cold, not from the chilling alleyways of the city, but from the lack of love surrounding me.

Reflecting back on those days, I often spent time  wondering how I had even ended up where Iwas today. I found myself standing on a twelve foot ladder, attempting to balance as I held a banner in place. We were located outside of the hotel, trying to put up a banner to make the hotel seem even more inviting. The banner read ‘Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel!’ On the banner were small doodles of things such as rainbows, courtesy of the only person I could tolerate within hell. Charlie Morningstar, my wonderful girlfriend. She was the opposite of me in many ways, including my mentality on the sinners of hell. She believed that anybody could be redeemed if they worked for it, and I just happened to be amongst the doubtful. Despite this, I was still determined to help Charlie’s dream in anyway possible

“Could you bring it up a little sweetheart?” Charlie called from the ground below, smiling upwards at me with a cheery smile.

As I moved the banner upwards more I managed to give a short reply, “Alright, tell me if it looks good.” Once it was in place, I looked down towards Charlie once more. She gives me a thumbs up, me replying with a sigh. I was mostly just relieved to finally be over with this minor chore. I hung the banner, jumping down from the ladder gracefully.

“Oh my gosh it looks amazing!” Charlie exclaims, jumping with excitement. She swiftly pulls me into a quick hug, leaving me slightly flustered. I smile, staring up towards me and Charlie’s banner. I was quite proud of how it turned out, especially after I had dropped half of the banner in mud. I had some trouble believing that this would help the hotel at all, but Charlie seemed insistent on putting it up. I look towards Charlie again, deep in thought. As my vision again focuses on my girlfriend, I can see her looking at me with a fond look in her eyes. I chuckle, smiling again at her.

“What?” I ask with a cheerful, yet questioning tone. My eyes match the fondness of hers, though I did hope my eyes held more.

She turns her head toward the banner sighing, “Nothin’, I just like to see you smile.” I become even more flustered at the response, being unable to answer. Charlie notices, softly hugging me as she allows my brain time to catch up.

We hold there in each other’s embrace for what seems to be forever, before I finally seem coherent enough to muster a response, “Oh yeah? Well I like seeing you smile too.” Charlie smiles even brighter, causing me to ruffle her hair and place a small kiss on her cheek.

Reflecting back on the days before I had met Charlie, I never wished to go back to those times. Now I could have that warmth I craved for so long, and I could feel the love of my amazing girlfriend everyday. Nobody could have been happier than me at this moment.
