"As God said in Leviticus 18:22.. You shall not lie with a man as you do with a woman. The kids today aren't listening though. Again You shall not lie with a man as you do with a woman. It's an ABOMINATION HE SAYS" "ABOMINATION" the crowd shouts and repeated while loudly clapping.
"We have to pray for the children out here who thinks it's cool. The devil has a hold on them and they love it" the pastor continued and the crowd gets worked up and stands while agreeing. "AMENNN" "YES LORD" "HELP GODS CHILDREN"
"Sarahi close your legs, you are a young lady" the young girl sighed as she slowly crossed her legs. She held in her tears as she looked at the dress she was forced to wear that morning. She pulled it down like it was short, but it was only uncomfortable. Hating how tight it was on her, she felt like she was suffocating and the lace itched. She just wanted to be like the boys who got to wear pants to church.
She asked one time and got popped in the mouth so she never asked again and just cried about it sometimes when she was alone.
After service was over Sarahi stood impatiently as she watched her grandmother chatting and gossiping with all of the other elderly women. She was used to it, but this afternoon she had to pee and she didn't want to go by herself.
"Nona I gotta pee" she pouted and her grandmother barely looked at her. "Non-" she felt the lump in her throat growing. She felt it burning, and looked around to see if it was safe to let out a few tears.
"I'll go with you" she heard and she quickly wiped her eyes and nodded. Feeling embarrassed she got caught crying by another kid. She didn't want to look like a crybaby.
"What's your name?" She was asked "Sarahi" "Cateleya" and Sarahi eyed her curiously.
The young girl was the shade of a bronze medal. Big dark brown eyes and really bushy, thick eyebrows. Her hair was in two really long braids and what stuck out the most to Sarahi was that she was wearing pants.
Sarahi tried not too stare for too long, not wanting to be rude.. But she was curious about this girl she had never seen before.
"Why do you sound like that?" She asked innocently and Cateleya smiled lightly. "I'm from Colombia" "Colombia" Sarahi slowly repeated as she tried to copy the accent.
"Eres adorable" Sarahi giggled at the Spanish which made Cateleya smile at her. "What does it mean?" Sarahi asked and Cateleya just continued to smile as she pushed opened the door for the restroom.
Sarahi went into the stall while Cateleya played with the hot wheel she stole from her brothers.
"Thank you for coming with me" Sarahi washed her hands, kinda struggling with reaching for the soap. "Yeah, no problem" Cateleya looked away from the car to flash her a smile.
They were about to leave the bathroom when the door opened. Making Sarahi's heart fall to her toes.
"Hi Leya" one of the girls said and Cateleya gave her a head nod. "You in here to look at girls again?" Ariel asked Sarahi, making her look down and play with the ends of her dress. "And your dress is ugly" the group of little girls laughed. "Leave her alone" Cateleya spoke up, confused on why Sarahi was just standing there. "Why? She's a dyke. My daddy says they have no place here" Cateleya frowned at her new friend being called a name.
"Cmon" Cateleya grabbed Sarahi's hand and they walked out of the bathroom.
"You-" before Cateleya could really say anything, Sarahi quickly scurried away. Leaving Cateleya looking stuck and confused.
Leya's feelings were hurt and she reacted by getting an attitude. She folded her arms over her chest then then went to go sit down, next to her mother.
She hit her brother who was just minding his business. He of course hit her back and they started slapping each other. She grabbed his hair and yanked hard. The young boy started crying which got the attention of their mother. "Nosotras estamos en la iglesia deja de avergonzarme" their mother whisper yelled, lips curved. They nodded, sinking into the church chairs.
Sarahi watched from a distance before she felt herself get yanked up. "I've been calling you guh. Let's go, I want some pancakes" Sarahi grinned at the thought of food. She had only eaten a small bowl of fruit loops when she got up that morning.
They didn't leave until about another 16 minutes because her grandmother found another person to talk to.
"Did you enjoy church?" Was the first thing she was asked after they took their orders. "Yes ma'am" "good because I expect a paragraph about something you learned about Jesus today" "but I thought that was because I was out of school?" "It is. You have a week of summer break left. This will be your last one" Sarahi lightly sighed and tried not to cry.
"Don't cry in front of your French toast now" Sarahi's watery eyes widens at the mention of her favorite food. She didn't realize her grandmother ordered some for her. "That's that little smile I love to see, now let's pray"
They prayed and Sarahi silently ate as her grandmother hummed a gospel song. Sarahi's mind was focused on what she was going to write about. Most times she paid attention in church but there was days like today where her mind would be elsewhere.
She couldn't remember anything she learned about today and she was silently panicking.
"I'm sorry you won't be able to get new school clothes immediately when you start school this year. For some reason they cut my check last week but I'll be covering shifts to get you some as soon as I can" her grandmother brought up, stopping her panic.
"It's okay. I know you would, if you could" Sarahi lied. It wasn't okay, the kids especially Ariel would notice her old clothes and they were definitely going to say something mean to her.
Sarahi started getting nauseous and teary eyed. "I'm full" she forced out "already? Dang Rahi.. I guess you can eat it later then" her grandmother replied. It wasn't out of the ordinary for her to not finish her food so her Claretha didn't suspect anything.
"I feel sick" Sarahi mumbled, hating how she could feel her own chest beating fast. She felt her grandmothers cold fingers touch her forehead and she felt herself shaking. It wasn't from the cold. "Hmm your body is a little warm.. Let's pack up so I can go get you some ginger ale. It is also around your nap time" the elder woman looked around and waved over the waitress.
Sarahi took deep and shallow breaths as it seemed like nothing could calm her down. So she started to sing her favorite gospel song. "I- I'll p-praise you. Weather h-happy or s-sad" she released a shaky breath and tuned out her grandmother.
"I'll p-praise you, in all t-that I go through. Because praise is what I do.. cause I owe it all to you..."
