Our story starts . . in a beaten down neighborhood. Located in Oakland California, cheers of young children playing on the hot chalk decorated sidewalks. Street basketball and audiences, and more common the usually your average gunshot.
Every person has that million dollar dream of 'making it out', and going on to do bigger and better things, that's what the Jackson family was hoping as their oldest daughter made her way to the mailbox of there moderate size house.
19 year old Malaysia Jackson, made her way down her family's rock driveway. Sweat running down her head from the heat as soon as she stepped out the house. Of course the heat wouldn't be any different when she would retreat back into their home. Money was tight, and AC just wasn't in the budget.
Looking through the stack of never ending bills, she felt her hands tremble when she came upon what she had been waiting for. She ran her fingers over the red print writing on the white envelope, Lincoln University. One of the few University's that were even close to the bay area, she had applied that school year as a graduating senior. The only college she applied to.
Not that she couldn't of applied to another college, the young woman was far from dumb. She was 7th in her class with a high GPA, her family was proud of how well she excelled in school. They pushed for her to apply to other colleges out of state. But she declined, she couldn't bare to leave her family. How could she of slept in a new fancy state knowing her family would still fall asleep to the lullabies of police sirens? She couldn't.
With excitement on her mind she rushed back into the house, careful not to wake up her two baby siblings, Elena and Shaun both 3 years old. Though the list of siblings didn't stop there, Malaysia found herself being the oldest of 5. Yes 5 counting herself, second oldest being her brother Isiah approaching his senior year when the summer would be over, and her sister Melanie who seemed to be 16 going on 25.
Rushing past the babies rooms, and into the living room where her mother and father sat joined by her other brother and sister. "Its here." she exclaimed jumping in front the TV that showed the news.
Her mother clapped turning the TV set off. "Well open it up honey." her father smiled his chin hairs glistening with the greys of wisdom, only being 40. "I can't, I already feel like throwing up. I'm shaking." she slumped next to Isiah as Melanie reached over grabbing it.
"For goodness sake, I'll do it." the sass in her voice rose as she ripped the letter open. Gripping onto her brother's shoulder Malaysia kept her eyes shut iron tight. "Okay go." ready for the worst, or the best. The family listened as Melanie read aloud.
"Dear Malaysia Jackson, Lincoln University would like to say we appreciate your appliance to our school, blah blah blah. With that being said - " the sister's eyes grew as she examined the letter.
"We here at Lincoln University, Oakland California are glad to welcome you into the class of 2019!" roars erupted in the small house on Magnolia street, west Oakland. The first person in the Jackson family to ever go to college, history in the making for the humble and proud family.
Though . . . not to far in a large arena that would normally be packed with fans, was subtly quiet. Except for the echoing of two basketballs. Two young men wearing workout gear, found themselves shooting around.
"So how many is that anyway? 8 girls now?" one of the young men spoke as he stepped behind the three point line, watching the ball sail through the wind. Nothing but net. Both men tall with different height frames, the other man dribbled to the basket shooting the ball into the net off the backboard.
"Well when you say it like that." the young man shook his head, some would call him a player. Others a heart breaker, he himself liked to say he was just tasting all the flavors. Like Goldie locks finding the right seat. The man's name was Klay, starting line up for the Golden State Warriors.
On camera he was a quiet, humble, hardworking man. But only true people could see past his good demeanor and find the sly fox that resided inside of him. "I'm just saying, you should try to find the right one." his friend shrugged looking at him.
Klay wasn't one to open his heart up to girls, maybe open their legs up. He constantly had his guards up, everyone had a past with things they miss and regret. He was no different, love just didn't seem to be in his deck of cards. He was a controlling soul, who could be hard to please at times. Klay loved power.
Sooner then he thought though, he would cross paths with a woman where he would find the dominance for power would be much harder to maintain.
