"You said your people were dead, past tense!"
Wilfred followed behind the Doctor as he ran around trying to repair the ship we were stranded on. While they were busying themselves, I was in a state of shock. The last time I had seen my people, was when I was escaping in the height of the war that had broken out between my people and our enemies, the Daleks. I was young, much younger than I am now. I had stolen a vortex manipulator, and barely escaped with my life. The Daleks were from a planet called Skaro, and they were our greatest enemy. Even today.
There shouldn't be any way for the Timelords to escape the Time war, the Doctor had put the entire event into a time lock all those years ago. "Inside the Time War. And the whole War was Timelocked. Like, sealed inside a bubble. It's not a bubble but just think of a bubble. Nothing can get in or get out of the Timelock. Don't you see? Nothing can get in or get out, except something that was already there." I froze, shaking my head.
"The signal, the signal in his mind. The drums. I've heard them." My voice was low as I spoke, moving to help the Doctor repair the ship. If we were lucky, we'd be able to stop the Master from bringing the Timelords back. This was our only chance. "If they can follow the signal, they can escape before they die."
There was confusion written on Wilfred's face as he came to stand beside of me. "Well then, we'll have a reunion, a party!"
"There will be no party, Wilfred. War drove our people mad, turned some of them into monsters."
The Doctor and I kept working as our conversation turned into silence. Not a word was spoken as we worked, crossing wires, fusing them together, attaching buttons back where they should be. "You two, over there." The Doctor was speaking to Addams and Rossiter, "This is a salvage ship, yes? Which means you should have asteroid lasers, right?" Addams nodded her head but remained silent.
Rossiter stepped forward, folding his hands together in front of him. "They're frazzled, it didn't help that you fried our systems." The attitude in the Vinvocci's voice was slightly annoying, but I minded my own business, keeping my hands busy. We didn't have much time to get back to the Naismith mansion where the Master was still located. We honestly didn't have time for bickering.
Very quickly, the Doctor threw a lever, and two individual gun alcoves open on either side of the flight controls. I had to admit, I was rather impressed with how fast he was working. But then again, we were both in panic mode. "Addams, I want you on that one, and Wilfred, the old soldier's gotta little more fight in him, I think. You on the other." Both of them moved quickly, taking their places as I stepped over behind Wilfred, laying my hand gently on his shoulder. I hated that he was even involved in this at all. It wasn't fair that he had to put himself in danger in order to try and help the Doctor and I. "Oh, I forgot to mention," The Doctor muttered, giving me that face of his when he didn't want to get yelled at for forgetting something important. "Missiles, they're going to be firing missiles at us." My face dropped as I looked at him with wide eyes.
"But we're in a dead spaceship!" Rossiter called, throwing his hands up with confusion and a touch of rage. "You killed our ship when we got here!" The Doctor let out a light laugh as he flipped another lever, and the ship came back to life. The monitors lit up, the lights came back on. The sad thing about it though, was that now the Master would be able to find our location. As soon as the ship was powered up, the Doctor ran to the wheel in the center of the room. "This might be dangerous, but it's the only shot we've got at making it back down to Earth in order to stop the Master from making one of the biggest mistakes of his life."
Raising a brow, I walked in his direction. "What are you talking about? What's your plan?" I understood that there wasn't much time for us to talk out a plan, but whatever the Doctor had planned was giving me chills. Instead of giving me an answer, he gave me a smirk, taking hold of the wheel.
"Allons-y!"
a few moments later...
We were moving very fast, and the Doctor showed no signs of slowing down after we entered the atmosphere. Now we were flying just above the ocean. Wilfred and Addams were firing the asteroid blasters like crazy, taking out one missile after another as the Doctor only continued to gain speed. I was clinging to a railing by one of the consoles, barely able to keep myself on my feet with how fast we were moving. I wasn't sure how Rossiter was even keeping his footing at this kind of speed, the Doctor to. I was sure if the Doctor didn't have ahold of the steering wheel that he'd fall and bust his backside just like I had. "You're crazy!" I yelled at him, watching out the windows as more and more missiles continued to come in our direction.
Oh how I wished he would've told me about the missiles when I'd first woken up, or how he had planned to plummet nose first through the Earth's atmosphere. A warning would've been nice instead of having to find out by sliding across the floor like a rag doll. Looking at me briefly, the Doctor flashed me a bright smile before turning his attention back to what was in front of him. "Lock the navigation!" He yelled over the sound of firing guns. "Lock it on to England, directly on the Naismith mansion!" The ship gave a beeping noise to confirm the navigation had locked on to our destination, and anxiety struck me. The closer we got, the more my stomach churned.
If we weren't smart about this, the entire Earth and all of its inhabitants would suffer. The Timelords attempting to come back wasn't really on my bucket list of things I wanted to witness. Not only did that turn my blood, but there was another thing that was bothering me. "Doctor," Wilfred called out, "You said you were going to die." Rossiter had a look of confusion as he looked at the Doctor. "But does that mean all of us? I won't stop you sir, but is this it?" My hearts ached for Wilfred, and I would've comforted him if I knew what the Doctor was thinking. The fact that the Doctor had told Wilfred about his on-coming future shocked me. I didn't think he'd have shared that information with anyone.
Taking my attention off of Wilfred, I looked back out the window, watching as the Naismith mansion started coming closer and closer into view. The Doctor didn't give Wilfred an answer, though I wish he would have. Instead, as we came right up to Naismith's mansion, the Doctor jerked the nose of the spaceship up into the air, bringing us right over top of a glass dome. "What're you doing?" I questioned, regaining my footing as the spaceship came to a halt. My hearts were pounding as I watched the Doctor take Wilfred's revolver and run towards the hatch in the floor. "Doctor?" Approaching him, I watched as he ripped open the hatch, staring down at the glass dome below us. What was he planning?
For a moment, the Doctor looked up at me with pain-filled eyes. I wish I could've read his mind, I wish I knew what he was thinking. "Cara, I know I've told you this so many times. I know you know it's true. I love you, Cara. I really, really do." And with that, I watched in shock as the Doctor jumped down the hatch.
"No!" I screamed, running forward with tears already pricking my eyes. This couldn't be how I lost him, this couldn't be what Sigma Ood had been talking of. There was no way! I fell down to my knees, watching through the hatch as the Doctor began to fall faster and faster through the air, until he smashed through the glass dome. It felt like someone had taken a knife and stabbed me in both of my hearts. Wilfred ran over to me, trying to pull me away from the hatch as I stared down. "No! No! I won't let you do this alone! I won't!" I screamed, pulling out of Wilfred's grip.
In seconds I had my legs swung over the edge of the hatch. Wilfred was behind me, trying to pull me back. I wouldn't let the Doctor go out like this; I wouldn't let him die alone. "I have to, I have to!" panicked, I gripped the sides of the hatch before looking at Wilfred. "Find Donna, take care of Donna. I'm sorry Wilf, I can't let him die alone!" With that, I pushed myself up onto my hands, and let go, free falling through the air.
