"Fuck you!" you practically screamed, throwing a plastic cup at your once-presumed-dead boyfriend. You almost wished it were glass. L ducked out of the way of the projectile.
"Please, let me explain." He held his hands out as if that would calm you down, but you only got more frustrated.
"I thought you were dead. I thought I had lost you!" Tears began spilling from your eyes and down your red cheeks.
"I understand, but--"
"No, Lawliet, I don't think you do." L flinched at his name. You generally weren't suppose to say it to keep his identity safe. You only used it when you two were alone and the moment was intimate, meaning one where both persons' vulnerabilities were present. You were crying. Your boyfriend just came back from the dead after you barely recovered from the devastation of his passing. So, yeah, this was a pretty vulnerable moment for you.
"But just hear me out. Can you do that for me?" His voice was so gentle. It carried all the love he had for you and the sweetness of the desserts he ate. His wide eyes were pleading like a puppy hoping to be taken home from the pound. You weren't sure what to feel anymore. You spent so long having a hard time believing L was dead, and now you struggled to believe he was actually alive. You sniffled. L walked cautiously towards you. When he got close enough, you wrapped your arms around your lanky lover and latched onto him as if letting go would surely kill him again. You sobbed quietly into his chest. L wrapped his thin arms around you tightly. "I was too close to the case to solve it. Kira was going to try to kill me. I had the Death Note replicated and switched it out temporarily. Then I took a pill that stopped my heart for a bit. Watari was the only one who knew I was alive." L explained softly. Your sobbing stopped halfway through, leaving you to sniffle occasionally.
"So you played from the sidelines." You interjected.
"I made sure you would be safe, but I couldn't let anyone know I was alive. Light thought he overcame his greatest obstacle when I died. He became arrogant." You understood why L did it, but you were still upset, yet also very relieved that he was okay. You let your knees give in, and the both of you dropped to the wooden floor of your apartment. L held you tighter after that. You wondered how long he'd let you cling to him. You weren't planning on letting go for a while. Not until you were sure he wouldn't leave again like that.
"Just try not to put me through that again if you can avoid it, please. It..." Your voice broke, but you tried to hold back a sob. L rubbed your back lightly.
"I'm sorry. I promise I won't do it again." L has broken his promises before, but you weren't going to press him on the matter. The point was he was here. He was alive. You wiped your face with your sleeve and sniveled. You felt an overwhelming sense of relief that made your head feel strangely light as if you were floating, and it almost made you feel sick in the stomach. "Hey," L said just barely loud enough for you to hear, and you looked up. You barely had enough time to focus your vision on the man before thin lips crashed into yours. You took in a sharp breath as a wave of warmth hit you, tingling and traveling from your chest all the way to your toes. The connection counted each night he went without kissing you and each night you cried over him, and it sent it all back through waves. Your body electrified and your heart fluttered as if you were the one resurrected. Energy surged through you like a first breath of air after almost drowning. Energy that you thought was buried with your boyfriend. Your hand went to the back of L's head and entangled in his mop of hair, and your head tilted to deepen the kiss. You didn't care that it revealed how desperately you wanted this. L didn't seem to mind communicating the same desperation either.
"You better be crazy old when you die because otherwise I'll being trying to call your bluff now." You said when you finally broke away. L hummed amusedly, stroking a thumb across your cheek.
"I love you, too."A/N: I didn't know what to title this, so yeah. L's "escaped death" excuse is a bit of a stretch, but it's whatever.
