A Final Goodbye

You hear a click come from the CD as it begins to play. Sounds of a microphone being rubbed against cloth start the audio up. Then you hear a clear of the throat. “Yes, well, ________.” You hear a familiar voice speak. You gasp, bringing a hand to your mouth. Tears start to form in your eyes.
      Lawliet
“If you’re listening to this then I am most likely dead. And, yes, _______...” He pauses for a second just like he would do when he knew you’d be mad at him. “I did expect this…” God, if he were here right now you’d punch him so hard...but...
You pause the recording, taking a few deeps breaths before you started bawling. That bastard. You thought sorrowfully. Why didn’t he do something? If he knew, why wouldn’t he at least tell me? You held your stomach. You already felt like you were going to puke. You had just gotten back from Lawliet’s “funeral”, and now you were listening to this? You could stop, and listen to it tomorrow. It’d give you time to calm down…but you couldn’t bear to let the remainder of the recording be a mystery for the rest of the night.
You press the play button on the CD player…
“You’re upset, I know. You’re probably wondering why I didn’t even tell you.” Know-it-all… “To tell you the truth, I had thought that this would be easier. Now, I’m not so sure. However, I don’t have time to change my mind…
“_______, from the very moment that I saw you, I was in love. You have so much personality—not a single part of it can I compare to anyone else’s. You’re so beautiful. Every perfection and imperfection that you have is why I love you. I know that I didn’t always show it, but I did try. Though, when Kira’s sitting in the same room as you, it’s probably best to seem distant to everyone…” Was he talking about Light? Did he still believe Light was Kira? Even after…
“It’s funny. I keep hoping I’ll hear your voice from this recorder,” Lawliet seemed to chuckle a little which surprised you. He didn’t do even that very often. There was a bit of shuffling going on in the background as if Lawliet was adjusting himself in his seat. “I remember that look on your face when you saw me handcuff myself to Light. You were throwing more of a fit than Misa Amane. And then you wouldn’t leave our side for two days. Constantly, you complained, and made jokes, and teased us. ‘Kinky bastards,’ you called us. I think Light was actually getting frustrated with you, and I also think you knew that.” You smiled softly, remembering that time like it was so long ago. “The two days you wouldn’t leave our side, I had to force you to go to your own room at night when Light and I needed sleep, and I’ll admit, that was entertaining too. Especially when Matsuda told me that both nights you tried to sneak out of your room to see us. I don’t know what you were so afraid of—though I could take a few guesses—but it was hard trying not to smile at that.” Tears streak your cheeks non-stop now. You sniffled quietly as you listened on. L talked of all those times he had with you. Every moment you made him laugh, or smile, or even just wanted to laugh or smile. He made a point to talk about it all.

“Remember how we met? Your father was killed by Kira. You said that he wasn’t guilty. It was all just a misunderstanding, and you had the evidence to prove it. But before you could prove anything, he died of a heart-attack. Surprisingly enough, I have yet to figure out how you discovered us since you refuse to tell me for some reason, but you came into the building one day, demanding that you’d be a part of the investigation. I will admit, the only reason I said yes was because Light said no. You must’ve gotten him nervous finding us as quick as you did.” There was a pause. You heard a sniffle, but it took you a moment to realize that it wasn’t yours. You couldn’t help but to sob when you realized this. You would have never thought L would ever cry…but his voice even wavered faintly when he spoke again. “I’m sorry, ______. I’m sorry I have to leave you like this,” the sadness in his voice was clear. It punctured your heart and the pain spread through chest. You clenched your fist to your breast, but the pain wouldn't leave. It seemed like the soul purpose of this was to make you cry until you ran out of tears. You could hear rain begin to fall in the recording. L gave one last sniff before he seemed to pull himself together. “And then there was our first kiss…” he continued on with his voice back to its usual monotone. “You surprised me with it, I’ll admit to that. You kind of threw yourself at me. It was nice though. You always taste…sweet. Your hair’s really soft too. I recommend whatever shampoo you’re using. You also make delicious cake.” You could tell he was trying to lighten up the mood. You smiled a bit, but tears still ran down your face. When would they finally stop? “You had a funny sense of humor, and your laugh…” A voice called for L from a distance. He was quiet afterwards, but then called back. “Right…” he muttered after a bit, “______, knowing you, this part will be just be wasted effort, but I’m going to try anyway: Please…go home.” You stopped, all sobbing ended, all sniffles ceased. You became silent as you listened to this part. “I want you to go back, and live your life. The others will handle the investigation, I’m sure. But it’s extremely dangerous for you now. The only reason I was alive for so long was because Kira only knew my alias as L. But you’ve already revealed your real name. You’re smart too. If you get too close, Kira will not hesitate to kill you. You weren’t dead before because I would no doubt suspect Light if you were to die. You have the option to leave all this behind. Remember that. I love you…” A click was heard, and the recording ended. You lowered the CD player onto the concrete under you, and took a look at your surroundings. L was on the roof when he recorded this, and you were on the roof when you listened to it. With that in mind, you curled up in your foldable chair, and sobbed the rest of your tears away.
“Lawliet…” you whispered into your arms, “Why’d you have to die? How are you going to tell me just to give up on the Kira case now?” You faintly feel arms wrap around your body, but you don’t feel any warmth, only the bitter coldness. However, the feeling…the way these arms wrapped around you…they felt so boney and awkward…it couldn’t…
Your head shot up, a burst of hope filled your heart, but you were quickly disappointed: No one was there. You wanted to cry more, but by this point you couldn’t conjure up the tears. You took a deep breath.
“______?” That was Light's voice. You turn your head to look over your shoulder. Light was at the door, looking at you curiously. Your eyebrows furrowed at the sight of him, and you turned your head back to watch the sunset. “What are you doing up here alone?” Light asked. You pushed out an irritable sigh. Why couldn’t he just leave you alone for today? “L…Ryusaki used to come up here a lot. He wasn’t really much for it, but I’d sometimes make him come up here and watch the sunset with me. I’d usually have to bribe him with sweets. This is where we had our first kiss and even several others. Overall, I’m just feeling really sentimental right now.” There was a tinge in your voice, but a lot of it was watered down by your previous sobbing. Light seemed a bit hesitant to speak again. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “I…I’m sorry,” he muttered, “We’ve all lost a good friend.” You cringed slightly at his words. The last person you wanted to hear that from was him. You stood, your hands balled into fist. You wiped your nose on your sleeve. Light looked to you in question as you spun on heal, and made your way to leave. “What are you going to do now?” he asked. You paused at this. What were you going to do? You could do as L asked and leave…but there was this part of you that wanted to stay and continue looking for Kira. That person had to pay. For all he’s done to you, and to everyone else. Second Kira; First...They needed to be stopped. But what good would you do? If they figured out L’s true name, then they were bound to know yours. You’d probably be dead the second you even peeked into the Kira case again. “I don’t know yet…” you admitted, “But whatever it is, it’ll be better than sitting here crying all day.”
