It was 10 in the morning when someone rang the bell. I got out of my bed, half asleep. I was trying to get up but I was so badly wrapped up in my blanket that it took me a few minutes to leave my beloved bed. Who the hell came so early in the morning? I know that people usually get up by this time but see, people who don't have a life like me consider 10AM the break of dawn!
I went up to do door and reluctantly opened it, with eyes almost closed.
"Yes?" I said.
"Ansel?"
The voice seemed very familiar. Well thanks to my stupid sleep, I didn't realise that it was Rachel for almost two minutes!
"Heyyy! Rachel! Come in." I said straightening up.
"Thanks." She said awkwardly.
"So how come you are at my house so early in the morning?"
"Well, your mother told me that you-"
I cut her in between, "That I am going to take up the case, right? So predictable."
"But I am here to help you, Ansel. You don't have to-"
I cut her again, "Do this, right? This is the best you got? Well let me just tell you this that I am not going to back off."
"Let me complete," she said which gave me a chill through my nerves. She continued, "I didn't come here to stop you from pursuing what you want. I just came to tell you that I am going to help you in it." She paused, "Ansel Timberlake, I want to help you solve this case."
I was a little shocked to answer, but after all I did, "Are you in you in your right mind Rachel? I am sure mom didn't want you to do this."
She winked, "Well I think I am going to take the risk this time."
I was astonished, yet relieved. At least someone was with me in this.
"So what's the plan?" she said and looked at me hopefully.
"Umm, the plan is...."
"There is no plan is there?"
"I will figure it out."
"You don't need to. I knew that you would not have anything to start with, but I do," she said, dangling a bunch of keys.
"What do you mean? What is this?"
"The key to Daire's post-mortem report."
"How the hell did you get it?"
"Well, I am a doctor so I have many contacts," she smirked.
"You are a genius!"
"I know," she said with pride clearly showing on her face. "But there is a problem," her face suddenly lost its gleam.
"What?"
"That we are not supposed to get the report," she mumbled, trying to hide her face.
"What! Then what are we going to do? What have you got these keys for?"
"We are going to steal the reports."
"Stop kidding Rachel! This is serious."
"Well then I am serious too."
"Huh? You actually are thinking of stealing?"
"Of course! Don't you want to know what happened?"
"I do, but-"
"Then you have got to take some risks!"
*FEW HOURS LATER*
"I can't believe I let you trick me into stealing the reports!" I exclaimed.
"God! Chill Ansel! I never knew that you were so... Tizzy."
"ME! We are god damn stealing! So you are supposed to do this thingy fast! But its like you are in a race with a tortoise in which whoever comes last wins!"
"Gosh! Stop panicking! I got it."
"Just take the damn file and come!"
"Okay, okay."
At last we were out of the dark, gloomy room. It was a very spooky one with thousands of files all around. I don't know how Rachel even managed to find Daire's post-mortem report. It was like a library with no proper shelfing. Then, we were stepping into the car, satisfied. Wait! I spoke too soon.
"ANSEL!" Rachel shouted literally making me fall off the stairs.
"Now what Rachel? Don't tell me you picked up the wrong file!"
"Of course I didn't! See this."
Get ready for another shock Ansel. Has your life ever given you something so easily that you thought that you would get this one with no faults? The post-mortem report had only one printed page, all the other ones were spotless white sheets.
"Now what does this mean?" I said, highly disappointed.
"Idiot! This means that someone has already been here before us. Only the first page of the report is here. All the other pages seem to have been stolen. The person who stole it was very smart indeed. He didn't take the first page so that anyone who saw this file would not think that anything was stolen. He even kept some blank sheets to add volume to the file. Some really clever person indeed!"
"Can you stop praising that bloody thief and start concentrating on what this first page says?"
"Ansel all this says is that Daire died at 11:40 AM, 16th May and the weapon he was killed with was a sharp one, like a knife, but not with gun or something."
"Not really helpful," I said, my enthusiasm fading away.
"I wish I could do something for you Ansel."
"You can Rachel, just drive me to Daire's office. I want to investigate the crime scene. I think that is the first place I should go to."
"Okay. Get in the car."
*AFTER COMING FROM THE OFFICE*
"Rachel, drive me to Jim's house." I said anxiously.
She started driving within no time and asked, "What happened in there Ansel?"
"IT MAYBE JIM!"
