Odd Geiger was a thin boy with a clothing style that you might call loser-core or found-in-a-dumpster-core, and he knew as much as anyone that he looked less than appealing, but in all honesty he really didnt care.
He was 17 years of age and quite tall for that. He was thin and not very muscular, his entire appearance you could describe as gray.
His skin was so pale that it was almost that, and his clothes were also exactly the same color. His hair was an ashy brown blond, and his eyes were mud brown.
The fact that he never spoke didn't help him being utterly and completely overlookable. And when i say he never spoke, i mean he never spoke. He didn't raise his hand in class, didn't answer when the teacher asked him a question. He was good in school, solid A's and B's, but his oral grade was quite lacking.
This has been going on since elementary school, and at this point, most students had gotten completely used to his silent presence. Contrary to what you might think, he was never bullied. People just didn't care enough about him. Most other students saw him as just another constant in their high school experience. Mrs. Canberra is a bitch, the girls bathroom in hall B is always locked, Odd Geiger sits in the back of the class says nothing and gets the best grades in the course.
And he was completely fine with that.
He didnt really need a friend, or a partner. He just went along with things.
He was flexible. That is untill one day. November 17th to be exact, lunch break. Odd was sitting in his regular spot on the side of the cafeteria, eating his food, looking out the window, and sitting alone all as always.
'This seat free?'
The voice came from a somewhat short black boy with friendly eyes. He had a welcoming smile on his face.
This boy was Asher Parry. He also was a 17 year old senior, and was quite known around the school. He wasnt really 'popular' in the classical sense, it was more that he was nice to just about everyone. And the entire school agreed that he was just a nice boy. This same reputation he had around town.
He was a bubbly, happy boy who easily started conversations with anyone. And he had a bit of a secret.
See there was one person in the whole town that Asher had never built up the courage to speak to. A boy he had had his eye on since middle school. He looked at him in class whenever he could. He practiced what he would say if he ever did build up the courage to speak to him.
This was the only instance ever where he had no idea what to say. He could just start a conversation like he did with everyone else like 'hi how are you?' Or 'that maths test really was tricky.' Or 'man mr. Miller really is an asshole.' But he never really saw any of these prompts going anywhere. This boy he had a crush on didn't speak. Like ever. And he also had no idea if he even liked boys or not.
On this fatefull november day, he finally figured out what to say to him after years of thinking:
'This seat free?'
Odd pointed at the seat and nodded.
So Asher sat down.'You're in a couple of my classes, odd right?'
He said as if he didn't know just about anything he could about him without it being creepy.
Odd's response was another simple nod.
This next part of the conversation was crucial for Asher. He would try to get to meet up with his crush. But to make this as nonchalant as possible, he had to make it seem believable.
'Erm... you're great at math, right?'
The boy nodded.
'I've been trying to understand this chapter, but i just can't, erm.. do you think we could meet up sometime? You could help me out a bit?'
His question was, in fact not a hundred percent believable.
'Sure.'
What?
'What?'
'Sure.' Odd said again.
Odd said!
Odd Geiger had just said something.
AND THEN REPEATED IT.
This was big. Asher had never heard him talk before, and he had only ever heard other people thought he couldnt even talk.'When do you wanna meat up?'
Odd didnt say anything in response this time, instead he grabbed his phone out of his jeans pocket, typed something and handed it to Asher.
It was an opened 'new contact' page.
The 'name' field had been filled out with his name already. It was evident that Odd wanted Asher to type in his number. So he did.
'Just...erm.. write me sometime k?'
K? What the fuck was wrong with him?
But Odd didn't seem to see how utterly humiliated Asher was by this, and just nodded again.
The two of them sat at this table the rest of lunch time saying nothing.
Odd said nothing because Odd never said anything. And Asher said nothing because he was scared if he did he might explode. When the bell rang Asher picked up his tray faster than what would have probably been considered needed or polite seeing that he was sat with another person, and practically ran off to god knows where.
