I can not recall the last time I saw the sun.
The ashes of war covered the skies, so humans went underground. I can't blame them, because I was one of them. I was terrified, what did the future hold?
I heard about Ark Polaris and Alterna, Project Vita and Life's Sanctuary. But where I resided was Bunker C-3, an experimental bunker of the U.S. Government. Last thing I remember was being put in a pod and becoming freezing cold.
I've been frozen for years I can not count, decades, centuries even, who knows? Will the earth ever bear life like it had? Will humans return to the surface and breathe again?
I'll have to wait and see . . .

First thing I heard was the blast of dryers, the warm heat touching my sensitive and frail body, one that was motionless for far too long. Second thing I hear, latches opening and the pod door swinging open. I expect to be met with the normal blue lights of the room I was situated in, but it is pitch black . . . pitch . . . black.
I try to get out the pod, putting my hands on the outside and pulling forward, but due to my lack of movement in . . . forever . . . I fall to the ground, sending pain throughout my entire body. Not a good feeling I tell you.
I can't see around me and I feel the weakest I have ever been in my life. I try to recall the room layout, I know there is a door somewhere to the forward left of me, so I begin to crawl over there, slowly.
At some point, I reach it, I think. I feel the crack of the door, yep that is it. I slowly get up and feel for the door handle, I reach it, so I push open. It takes a bit of budging but it gets open, not without a lot of creaking.
I look around, nothing to see because it is so pitch black! So I have to walk around in the darkness for now, flashlights are probably dead at this point. So I aimlessly walk around, vaguely going off what I remember about the layout.
An hour probably has passed and I found the stairway, the logical choice, go up, so I do. Going around and around the center of rotating, while also going up slowly but surely.
At some point I reach the top of stairs, the floor where the door to the tunnel that leads to the surface should be. I open the door to access the main entrance room. I look around, I can see a little bit, I see the rough outline of the door, I can also make out the control panel.
I walk to the control panel, my steps echoing off the floor and walls of the large room. I reach it, the panel is dusty, like it hasn't been touched in ages, I see various switches and buttons, I see a large double pole switch. That must be the lever for the door.
I grab the switch and pull it towards me, a bit creaky and rusty. I hear a click, alarms blare and red lights start spinning. The alarms sounds broken, same with some of the red lights, either not attached to the wall or spinning.
I hear the loud sound of large metal parts scraping and creaking, the door starts to open. The door scraping along the concrete floor. At the midpoint, it stops, but the crack is large enough for me. So I slip through and into the tunnel.
I start walking down the tunnel, I see abandoned civilian vehicles and some groups of small military structures and vehicles. My footsteps echo through the whole tunnel. I reach the end of the tunnel, it seems a wall of concrete was made to seal the tunnel.
I notice a door, an average metal door. I walk up to it, I open it and see a very small hallway, I see significantly more light. Another metal door is at the end of the hallway, if you can even call it a hallway. I walk up to it, I grab it, it feels a little warm. I twist the handle and open the door.
Light blinds me, heat blasts onto my body. I divert and cover my eyes to avoid damaging them. It takes a long, and I mean a long time to adjust to the light. I look around, I see rusted vehicles and structures around me, and lots and lots of sand.
I start to walk around, confused, what happened? I keep walking, at this point I wonder, how long was I really frozen for, a thousand years, ten thousand, a hundred? Who knows, will I ever see anyone again? What will I do to survive?
I hear something in the distance. It starts out faintly, but it gets louder, and the louder it gets, it seems more like . . . a car. I stop in my tracks, I look around, I can see in the distance a truck, I can't make out the model due to the large metal parts put on the front.
I think to run, but I think otherwise, this is another human, it has to be! There is no other explanation! The truck stops around 10 meters in front of me, the left door opens, and a man, walks out of it.
