The three of us continued shuffling through the store. At this point, we are in different sections doing our own thing. I say sections loosely because the store was so small everyone was breathing down each other's necks. I didn't have my mind set on buying anything let alone what, at this point, I'm going through the motions. I then stopped in the tee-shirt section and began to search. All I see are cringe shirts that should have never saw the light of day and band tees from the 80s.
I begin the feel something over my shoulder as feel chills rush down my spine "BOO!" "OH SHIT" I spin around quickly as my face goes from pure terror to annoyance in a matter of seconds. It was Elana of course but she had a corny clown mask on clinging to her head. "Do you know how filthy the mask could be?" I snark with a growing smirk on my face, " Stop it because now I'm thinking about it. Disgusting!" Elana wines as she struggles to take of the mask. The Velcro was stubbornly holding onto her hair. "I got it" I mutter as I reach my hands around her serrated it. it finally gives up and I take the mask off her head but then I freeze.
Strains of her hair were stuck to her cherry-tinted lip as her perfectly applied gloss glittered from each corner. Her hair like the chilling winds wild and free yet still gently and soft. The way light always managed to dance across her hazel eyes with pure intention. I don't know if I'm falling in love or fire when in her gaze or maybe to me there is no difference cause either way I melt.
"Oakland are you alright?" Elana whispered in confusion. "OH yeah, my bad I just checked out I'm sorry." I sigh handing the mask to her and turning away. With Elana's confusion visibly she shook it off and chuckled." You're lucky you're so pretty 'cause you get away with being so dorky." Elana laughed dragging her hair behind her ear.*RING* Elana vibrated abruptly pulling me out of the moment. She pulls it out of her pocket startled as she answers the call. I pick up bits and pieces of the conversation.
"Hey Mom what's up?"... "It's only Seven Mom"..."No I'm not with him" "Please"..."Whatever"
She hangs up grunting with disappointment."I have to go I'm sorry it's my mom." Elana apologizes, she starts fidgeting with her finger and avoiding eye contact. She finally looks at me for a second and pauses waiting for a response, my heart breaks as her eyes soften." It's okay I understand there is no need to explain." She keeps eye contact, her lips open like she was about to say something but doesn't. "Well have a safe way home." I giggled trying to cheer her up. "You too I had so much fun I'll text you later." Elana smiled lighting up. We both hugged, she smelt like sweet mint her embrace was so warm. She held tightly before letting go the warmth leaving the same second. She smiled and walked toward Abby to break the news. I can't read lips to save my life so I didn't hear anything but Abby seemed disappointed and pissed. Elana walked away in the middle of her talking and left.
I walk to check out to purchase the flannel. I hand the flannel to the cashier to pay and he bags it. As I grab the bag i take a look inside, the flannel looks oddly lonely suffocated in the plastic. I walk the door turn around and wave to Abby. She looks at me but rolls her eyes and ignores the gesture. "Bitch" I whisper walking out of the store.
The chilling air rushes to my face making my nose twitch. I run swiftly to the car and shut the door before the breeze follows. Tossing my bag on the passenger seat I sigh with relief. I turn the car on start the engine then drive off. During my ride home I can't help but replay the whole trip back in my head. The ride was silent with the radio off and Bluetooth disconnected. Thinking about the look Elana gave me makes my head all fuzzy for some reason. Every time I'm near her I'm in a daze. I roll the windows back down and let the breeze bring me back to earth.
