living in the QZ,

the designated safe zone, wasn't all it was cracked up to be. in all honesty life outside the dauntingly colossal walls seemed preferable.
FEDRA had taken advantage of the desperate conditions, handing off the their own dirty work to the public in exchange for ration tickets.
tickets that barley covered the price of food.

if you wanted to make a living within the QZ turning to the dark seedy side was your best option — this often came in the form of smuggling.

that's how ruth found herself hidden in the shadows of a alley, taking cover after curfew had ended hours ago. it wasn't the smartest choice she'd ever made, sneaking back into the QZ after hours. usually the brunette would slink back within the walls at mid-day. the busy streets making it easier to go unnoticed by the stationed guards. yet ruth was on a strict time crunch set by marlene, the infamous firefly leader.

turning towards the elder woman, who sat patiently in the far corner, ruth raised a single brow, scoff escaping her lips. "kidnapping kids now?" questioned ruth, somewhat sarcastic.

"yes."

"no."

the differing answers over lapped each other, causing ruth to give the young girl one more glance over. "who the fuck is this, marlene?" spat the brunette, quickly growing bored and slightly irritated at this perplexing situation.

"hey, i asked you first!" the young girl was quick to throw out, her unfortunate predicament not discouraging the snarky attitude.

both women ignored ellie's commentary, marlene quickly drawing closer towards ruth. "shut the door." instructed the firefly, ruth complying without question. "what i'm about to show you stays in this room, underst-"
