I only moved to California after graduating college because my parents insisted on me keeping a backup plan. Our compromise.

At the time, rumors circled all over that artist Prince would make his national debut during an episode of "American Bandstand."

I found that program set just in time and waited between commercial breaks with the studio audience, now quietly beaming.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the broadcast: Prince!" Legendary host Dick Clark turned this album cover forward and showed Prince while announcing the first performance. Cheering patted. 

His second and self-titled album dropped this year, waking up many spots like radio stations or popular skate rinks.

He looked absolutely gorgeous. Slightly feathered bangs. Loose buttoned shirt. Gold pants.

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" pulled that bassline.

Even while lip-syncing, he stomped in boots and swung large earrings, jamming with his band right in front of us.

I ain't got no money.

I ain't like those other guys you hang around.

And it's kinda funny.

But they always seem to let you down.

And I get discouraged.

Either I started trippin' throughout the performance or energy changed over here because Prince looked at me while singing.
