Vanitas stared.
Leon stared.
And I stared at the two of them awkwardly.
Vanitas and I spent some time together at the bookstore trying to wait out the rain. When it didn't let up, we found ourselves back at Leon's where I revealed the good news; except the news wasn't as exciting for him. Both Vanitas and Leon sat on opposite ends of the large sectional couch with narrow eyes and tense features, all but glaring at one another.
Leon didn't yell at Vanitas but commanded him to sit on the couch. I didn't understand if he was using some detective tactic on my boyfriend or what, but the tension in the air was so thick I could slice it with a knife.
Leon leaned forward, propping his elbows on his knees with each fingertips touching one another. "What are your intentions with my daughter sir."
My mouth gaped open. "Daughter?!"
Vanitas snickered and I noticed him purse his lips together. Leon kept his straight face until Vanitas suddenly burst into laughter and Leon joined him. I was so dazed from the interaction I saw stars dancing in the air.
"Ah I just wanted to see your reaction Mariko." Leon laughed wholeheartedly, his smile was beaming. "And I've always wanted to say that."
Vanitas casually leaned back against the couch, resting his arm on the back of the couch just behind me. "Well, her reaction was definitely something."
"Hey!" I retorted.
Leon was still chuckling. "Vanitas, I don't need to know your intentions. You have taken very good care of her since she arrived. She's certainly uh..." Sheepishly he looked at me, and I returned his look with a pout. "Skiddish. So if she willingly not only agreed to date you but brought you here to face me afterwards? Well that says a lot about you doesn't it?"
Vanitas allowed his ego to get the better of him as his lips curled into a confident smirk as he smiled with his teeth. "What can I say? I'm a stud."
"You're Vanitas not some fuck boy! Stop messing around!" I playfully shoved him.
"Language!" Leon scolded.
I burst into laughter. The only approval I sought was from Leon. He was a rare role model that I looked up to and I was so glad that he could easily joke with Vanitas. With the two of them laughing my heart soared and I was so grateful things were going well. I adored Vanitas even if he was a grump sometimes, and I wanted Leon to see that too.
It didn't take long for everyone else to find out about our relationship as well. By the time the weekend ended and Monday rolled back around we were bombarded by the friend group waiting for us at the entrance. Vanitas and I agreed to keep it overall the same at school except the occasional hand holding. Neither of us were into PDA, but we didn't need to even try to be center of attention.
I was surrounded by the girls and separated from Vanitas. Kairi, Namine, and even Xion circled around me with excited happy faces. Normally I would have cowered in fear or tried to run away, but for some reason I felt content and accepted the ambush.
"Mari you have to tell me more!" Xion begged. "Vanny won't tell me a thing!"
"And I never will!" Vanitas retorted from his own bombardment.
Kairi waved his comment away. "How did he ask you out?! Was it super special?!"
I sheepishly grinned. "He had a small surprise but the rain kinda got in the way. But he still asked me!" I tried to be slightly honest about it without getting into much detail. That was a special moment for us and I didn't want to ruin that.
