It was supposed to be a brand-new start. A breath of fresh spring air after winter's cold harsh torment, the warmth of sunlight spread through Mother Earth's greens. It was supposed to be Kevin's second chance, it was supposed to be his true beginning.
Kevin never expected boarding school to be like this. Not by a mile, not in a million years. They say when you're young, you're free to try. To try learning, try trusting, try living.
For new experiences, new relationships, and a new life.
Kevin had been young once. He had been young when he left home in search of knowledge, far away from familiar faces and he had been young when he had first stepped into The Minion Academy.
Now, what had seemed to be a lifetime of opportunities laid down at his feet, seemed out of reach.
"Kevin, honey." Stuart gently calls, a soft lull in his twinkling voice. "It's time."
And there it was. Stuart's smile. A smile that could not be described as anything else but cheeky, like a forever grin. The same one he had worn since he was young.
Kevin remembers the first time he saw Stuart. Carefree, was the first word that had come to mind when he saw him. Washed-out denim overalls, splatters of paint spread over, goggles slightly displaced. Bright yellow skin sparkling in the sun's rays. His six strands of hair carelessly flowed through the wind. Pearly white teeth peeking through his carefree grin, dimples cheekily appearing like two little bunnies had burrowed into his cheeks. Black leather gloves covering his carefree fingers, coal dark boots, rough with wear, shoelaces as if undone.
Only his eyes had told Kevin otherwise. No, those eyes had no carefree nature behind them. Honey brown, glistening gold in the warmth of the sun.
It was full of hope, he would know. Kevin had seen the same look in his reflection after all.
Now, over 20 years later, Kevin's reflection stares back, tired. A shell of what he used to be. A belly bump tightening his overalls with breasts increasing ever so slightly every day and cravings more absurd and harder to fulfill. It had been worth it, he told himself. Stuart was worth it.
Thinking back to the first time he had seen Stuart, Kevin winced. It seemed foolish now to remember what he felt about Stuart, but he couldn't help it, especially not when he was young and naive.
Young Kevin despised people like Stuart. And to be fair, it was fairly easy to hate him.
Minion Stuart had it easy. Daddy's money helps after all. While Kevin had sacrificed everything to reach this academy, his family, his old friends, and his time to ensure that he got into the school, Stuart had it easy with his wealth, whispering promises for the school board and its director. Kevin hated him. Kevin hated Stuart for what he got, for seemingly nothing at all.
And yet, Stuart's stupid smile still lingers in his mind.
"Let's go, Kevin." reminds Stuart. "We're gonna be late."
The past seems far away now, the future a step away. Another fresh start for him he had hoped, but his eyes don't hold the same sparkle of promise anymore.
"I'll be there."
For Stuart.
He'll make a leap for the final time.
