Scott Pilgrim vs Charlie Depresso

It's a fact that we get along with people who like the same things as us. We are attached to people like us, so we don't have to change our mentality. Charly Depresso knew this but like we humans, most of the time, he didn't want to change.

When Charlie was younger, he didn't like to go to mainstream hype places, there is a phrase going in and out of his mind, between songs, that says "entre mas corriente, más ambiente."

It roughly translates to people with fewer resources are warmer. This might or not be true. The thing is that Charlie used to go to underground places, like cinemas. A estos cinemas donde nadíe va en México. Cinemas donde a veces pasan películas "underground" Sundance movies or B movies are in México as if you were talking about Tarkovsky in the States. Estos cines, most of the time "quebraban" en 2 o 3 meses. The atmosphere there was nice. Old people, still looking for movie schedules on the newspaper or in a computer at the library.

Depresso, sometimes, didn't like to be alone. And, somehow, somewhere, he got this weird idea that you were not allowed to go to the cinema by yourself. So, he invited people to come over to the cinema. A part of him thinks that you are not supposed to. Later, he learned that "The more the merrier", but that is another story.

He likes to invite friends to adventures, his friends most of the time never expect him to be the funny and easy-going guy he is. He likes to be at his place, drawing, and working. But he does know how to have fun. He tries not to blame anyone for his actions and feels strong connections to the rest of the world that throw people off balance when they talk.

Back to Scott Pilgrim premier in Puebla, México. He invited his friend Hoja, to watch this weird-looking movie. This was a little before the internet YouTube, Internet boom, around in 2014. Somehow, Charly Depresso knew about IMDB, which nobody knows in Mexico. Found a schedule on this one theater at this one hour.

He knew it was now or never. On other occasions, these types of films only lasted 1-week tops at the theater. Remember, it was pre-VOD time, and pre-Amazon, in Mexico. So, getting a DVD for this movie was going to be hard.

To his eyes. The casting was perfect, the characters were great, and the flow of the movie was there. "Dude the effects, they change the shape of the bokeh to enhance the boy meets girl moments" At that time, during film school, bokeh was a thing among young filmmakers.

Extreme-Flashforward. After a while, he realizes that being edgy and going against mainstream culture just makes him grow bitter and sick. From time to time, he keeps remembering a phrase his old philosopher professor once said.

When his professor was asked, by the bullies at school, why he was reading Twilight. The professor responded: "Everybody seems to talk about it... Why would I deprive my brain of knowledge". This blew his mind. Sometimes he finds new significance, now and then, to what his professor said.

Charly Depreso, likes to imagine his professor helping kids in a jungle in Chiapas, Mexico.

Most famous and knowledgeable people aren't in Harvard or working at NASA, but are spread, silenced, and happy.

"The bird doesn't sing because it has an answer it sings because it has a song."

Now Depresso listens to Taylor Swift and he's thinking about listening to Olivia Rodrigo. He's still the guy that you might confuse with a guy who acknowledges the first Lana del Rey album as Lizzie Kaplan's. But he is warmer, tougher, and a bathroom singer. Maybe because he always tries to surround himself with "mas ambiente" or maybe because he is happy now lost in a jungle, somewhere.
