I kept eating my popcorn as I looked at the flat screen of my television, a kind gift from my parents as soon as I got my first apartment. I personally would've stayed home with them, it was way cheaper, but since I had decided to enroll at a university on the other end of the country I kind of had to move out.
Studying wasn't that bad, I was an ok student but the problem was the money. You never have enough of that bitch, capitalism am I right? So there I was, using the only evening I got off my part-time job to watch a movie while filling myself with snacks instead of having dinner like a proper person would.
To defend myself, it had been a long time since last I could enjoy some me time. Working at a local grocery shop was no joke, mostly because it was open 24/7 and I mostly worked the nights, as scary as that sounded.
"Jeez, I feel disgusting." I murmured opening another bag of chips. I couldn't even remember my last proper meal, I mostly ate whatever at work and frozen food at home. I never really had time to cook anyway. Thinking about it, I could've gone out with some friends.
Well, not that I had made that many in the few months I had attended classes. Because of my job, I could never hang out or party like the rest of the kids in my class which sucked. I had a friend though, she was a very gentle and funny girl, can't really recall her name but she was the coolest girl I had met.
It had been two months or so since we started to hang out at school. She introduced herself to me once and I never caught the name, I felt awkward asking her again so I just waited and hoped for someone to say her name or to hear it from her... it never happened. So, to me, she's just Girl.
I refer to her as Girl most of the time and she thinks it's a nice nickname I gave her, and I hope she'll keep thinking so.
But not even a night out seemed that fun compared to the movie I was watching with such a hard passion. After all, Spider-Man had always been my favorite superhero and I had decided to rewatch his movies once again.
There was something so comforting about Peter Parker, he never failed to entertain me. I was in the middle of his last movie when suddenly my tv started glitching making me worry a bit. "Oh don't do this to me, you're new!" I complained as I got closer to the screen and started tapping on it hoping it would magically resolve the situation. "You're the only friend I have here, you can't abandon me like this." I begged the object with all my might.
But the little shit clearly had a problem with me because it turned off immediately. "Oh fuck off." But as I finished that sentence, every light in my apartment turned off which could mean only one thing... had I paid my taxes? Of course, I had! I was no savage. It was probably a blackout or something. "I don't even know what to do, how do you restore power?"
I had never lived alone before, wasn't there a tutorial about it on the internet?
I used my phone to get some light and looked around confused. All my home appliances were turned off only confirming my suspicions. But again, what was I supposed to do?
As I was about to get out of the apartment to ask someone for help, my neighbors were pretty friendly when they wanted to, the lights turned on again. I sighed in relief and sat back on my couch.
It was just a momentary thing, thank god. My neighbors were actually pretty weird and they could barely speak English, they spoke Spanish and referred to me as "gorda", I don't know what that means but I'm sure it's something about my hair.
The TV finally decided to turn on and I leaned against my couch, I just wanted to finish my movie and then get to sleep. I had to wake up early in the morning and the idea of not being able to keep my eyes open during class wasn't that tempting.
