Devastation. That was all it could be described as for the underwater city of Atlantis.

The people as a whole were still recovering from the recent war the surface dwellers had with an alien race, as well as the death of their King. My father.

As an effect of the aliens attacking the planet, a volcano had formed dangerously close to Atlantis putting us all in danger when it showed signs of erupting. My father, using the magic of the trident to save Atlantis from destruction and fought until the volcano no longer posed a threat.

The King successfully stopped the volcano from erupting, but not without sacrificing his own life in the process.

I was completely shattered, crying silently into my hands, the tears from my eyes mixing with the water.

Prince Orm, my older brother, was just as devastated as I was, although he hid it behind his emotionless facade.

Queen Atlanna, our mother, was nearby.  She held the trident that used to be our father's. I knew she felt her own grief, but like her son, she hid it well. She was now the queen of Atlantis and didn't have time to show weakness in front of her people. But I had heard her crying late into the night before as I passed her room.

She soon left the two of us alone as she probably had matters of the court she needed to attend.

As soon as she left, Orm let the brewing anger surface on his face, hands clenched into fists. "I will have my revenge on the surface world." He snarled, "Their deeds will not go unpunished."

I wiped my eyes, taking deep breaths to try and calm myself. "What--what do you mean?" I asked. "It was the volcano."

Orm's glare leveled on me. "They still had part in it! They are responsible for his death, Tani! They must pay for their crimes!"

I flinched, shrinking back at the harshness of his voice. He noticed my actions and sighed, closing his eyes.

"You do not understand. You are still young." He said, putting an arm around my back and turning me away from our father's tomb. "Someday you will have to learn. Come," he led me out of the room. "We both need rest."
