There was a comment made about how Mike was portrayed as the villain at the end of the story. It has bothered me for several days.
I feel that I failed you the readers, as well as my characters, if she comes off villainous.
This story has no villains. It has no heroes. It has some people who do some kinda shitty things but none of whom are actually terrible people.
Mike IS kind of a jerk. She does some things that are red flags in relationships in general. Like she doesn't respect who Aidan is or his boundaries. She treats service people like she's better than them. She blames others for her actions and choices when things don't go her way.
She is simply a victim of circumstance, though. She could be the heroine of another story... the girlfriend whose long time partner never really cared about her, who wasn't important enough to be fought for and who, in a moment of weakness, trashed her crappy relationship AND her job. Circumstances that forced her to start over homeless, jobless and broken hearted.
None of the other characters are any better, though. Aidan uses people because he doesn't want to be alone. Jake, despite all his protests to the contrary, sets out to be a man poacher. Sara and Amara are kind of vindictive, the hell with the consequences of the person they're playing vigilante for.
I love them all but they are all flawed people who make poor choices. As we all are. Hopefully they do better going forward. Just like all we can do is try to not be the person who made our past self's mistakes.
