The life of a Uniben student was not for the weak. I got accepted into the University of Benin for an International studies degree. I was a 300lv Major, meaning I had just a year left before I was done with the school. I was still gonna smile despite the suffering because I was better than those who just started school.
"Obasuyi I'm here, let's go" Phoebe said. "Alright... It took you awhile though" I laughed as we started walking to class.
"I was dressing up" she said cheekily
"It takes you an hour to dress up?" I asked incredulously
"I was looking for what to wear" she confessed.
"What's with you and always finding what to wear? Be like me, I pick my clothes two days to class"
"What?" Phoebe yelled eyeing my outfit.
I was wearing pink baggy joggers, a white polo shirt and white Crocs. My twists were wrapped in a big bun with two twists out in front and on my face. "No offense Oba, but some of us still want to look like girls" She finally said.
"The F**k does that mean?" I stopped in my track waiting for an answer but Phoebe walked on
"I'm just saying you should start looking more ladylike" She finally responded. I jog up to her.
"I am lady like... I still wear skirt and gowns" I protested.
"Only to church or when we wear cooperate wears on Tuesdays and Thursdays" she quipped
"That means I still wear!" I said.
"Ehn... Besides how do you expect to woo a man wearing all these?" She pointed to my joggers and polo. "Umm, excuse you I do have a man, he's just doesn't school here in Benin"
"Since when?" She asked surprised.
"I get man e, wetin dey worry u?? Abi u forget?"
Translation: I have a man, what's wrong with you? Did you forget?
"Lol, whatever you say" she giggled. My phone rang, Victor was calling. I smiled just looking at the phone.
"Who's making you smile so much?" Phoebe asked peeping into my phone.
"It's Victor" I said.
"Oh, our man!" She giggled "Tell him I said Hi" She added "Weren't you the one who said I didn't have a man a minute ago?" I laughed.
"Na you Sabi" She continued walking.
Translation: It's you who knows.
"Hey baby" I said picking up the call. "Yo! Oba what's up?" He answered.
"I'm good, and you?" I said
       "I just dey" he replied
Translation: I'm just Okay.
"Okay... So, why did you call?" I asked
"Can't I just decide to check on my girl?" He questioned. I giggled at his question. "Well... I'm on my way to class, I've got an 8am class right now and I believe I'm already late boo" I answered checking my watch. "Fine... I'll talk to you later" He sighed, hanging up.
I dropped my phone and ran up to Phoebe as we went to class.
We were having 3 classes and time seemed to not favour us students. It was so slow. We were studying about Russia's Independence.   Honestly, I don't get what's our business with this! It's not they'll ask us all these in the embassy. I thought to myself.
I sighed, folding my arms and sinking into my seat. Phoebe on the other hand was trying her best not to fall asleep. The sight made me laugh a little.
Just then, Debbie, my other friend, walked in.
"Good morning ma" she greeted the teacher, who gave her a nasty side eye as she walked to the back to find a seat. Always the late comer. I laughed again.
