It was a failure. Of course, it was a failure. Out of a line of twenty-six designs, one of them was bound to be. But the time allotted, funds expended, and sleepless nights he spent tinkering away prohibited Mercer from accepting it. This was his life's work. No matter what he did, however, a wall remained wedged between them, one he couldn't hope to penetrate.But perhaps someone else could? Someone who filled the void in areas he lacked. But Mercer stamped out the thought as soon as it arose. He would find a way to salvage this project, and he would do it on his own. Just as he always had.
