Bracken x reader (Fablehaven)

Chapter 3

The aroma inside the dome was soothing and fresh. "No time like the present." Bracken said walking towards an island surrounded by a small pond and Warren fell back sitting against the inside of the dome. Bracken grabbed my hand and gently led me across the stepping blocks, no creature of light tried to bar our path to the island.it was strange because every shrine i had visited before this one had, had guardians of some sort or another.

We reached the island and Bracken led the way to a small statue of a fairy at the center. Together we kneeled in front of it as a new scent overwhelmed my senses, simple yet elegant i couldn't place it.

Bracken broke the silence first,'' Greetings your majesty, it is I Bracken the hornless unicorn.". "You don't need to pretend, I know your her son, I'm not that dumb." I said , sighing. Bracken flushed as I felt a rush of emotion almost like pride and the Fairy Queen tittered. "Very well, Mother, we need help. Society has turned on the Sphinx; he is now our only inside man. We need to get off of this preserve so we can protect the Eternals, the Society has all of the artifacts and they are now our only defense.".

"I must admit I did not anticipate this; however, I believe I have a solution to your problem. It will take him some time to reach you, you must be patient.". The Fairy queen said as a touch of helplessness washed over me.

" Thank you, your Majesty." I said , voice cracking. An overwhelming surge of love washed over me," kendra, it was not your fault you are still young. We are at fault for making someone as young and innocent as you have to shoulder this burden. Do not let their sacrifice hold you back; they would wish you to excel to greater heights." She said as tears cascading down my cheeks and I crumpled into Bracken. His arm looped around me and he pulled me closer while he continued conversing with the Queen in the background. I could hear their conversation however the words washed over me without meaning.

After some time I felt myself being lifted into the air by a pair of strong arms, unconsciously I turned towards the source of the warmth as I lost consciousness.

My eyes slowly opened and I shot up glancing around frantically where I was, the last thing I remembered was Bracken and Warren. I swiveled back around to where I had been resting and saw them sitting next to each other looking at me with alarmed expressions.

"I..I can't-" I tried to say hyperventilating, I couldn't control myself. Everything was shaking. Was it an earthquake? No it was me, I was the one shaking. Bracken rushed towards me, wrapping his arms around me and cradled me close to his body. He murmured comforting words as sobbed racked my body, each one paining the wounds at my sides.. Slowly the Tears stopped coming and I extracted myself from his arms.

"I'm sorry, that was unprofessional." I said as shame cascaded through me. Bracken gently gripped my chin and turned my head to look at him "you have been through much for years, more than many could ever comprehend. Never be ashamed to feel grief.".still gently gripping my chin he titled my head upwards and his lips brushed against mine. For a second thought it could have just been a passing breeze and then he brought his face down again. This time instead of tentative he was passionate and loving.

After a few seconds he pulled away and met my gaze again,"Kendra, you are the most astonishing being I have ever met and I mean that with my whole heart.". My eyes filled with tears once more as I buried my face in his shirt. We stood there for a few seconds before he gently pulled me to where Warren was still sitting and he pulled my head into his lap as he absentmindedly stroked my hair. Sleep beckoned once more and for once it was natural sleep and I wasn't scared of what awaited me in my dreams.
